Hello everyone,
I’m surprised no one has brought up the new album by Christopher Bassett, bass trombonist of the St. Louis Symphony, which dropped on streaming earlier this month—at least as far as I’ve seen! His record, In Dreams, has been on repeat for me since its release, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
The playing throughout is absolutely phenomenal — beautifully expressive, technically stunning, and full of musical depth. Mr. Bassett’s sound and phrasing are incredible across the whole album, and his performance of the Ewazen in particular really stood out to me.
If you haven’t checked it out yet, I’d strongly encourage giving In Dreams a listen. It’s a fantastic addition to the growing body of solo bass trombone recordings and a real treat for anyone who loves great brass playing.

I preordered the CD, so I basically listened to it all summer! Chris’s attention to small details and constant stride to always make his musical intentions clear is not only great for us listeners, but I find it extremely inspiring for my own goals. Definitely an album that shouldn’t be slept on!

I got drawn to the first track on Spotify. Ralph Vaughan Williams, Songs of travel. The vagabond. For me that song is magic. I hope he makes some more!
