Olds P-22 George Roberts Model ( 1973 )

Post by TheConnArtist70H »

Hi Y'all, :hi:

A few weeks ago I spotted the above Horn for sale at a very reasonable price, great condition so decided to
buy it ( another one to hide from my wife ). Well it arrived the other day and I managed to smuggle it up
into my Man cave. Today was the first chance to get it out and have a blow, my initial thoughts were that the
F trigger was going to be the main disappointment before even blowing a note, as I'd previously bought the
S-22 TIS George Roberts model ( 1965 ) which isn't the best Trigger system but you know what, this P-22 system works fine so I was overjoyed, I decided to use the Conn 1 1/2g a try on my first blow and was amazed at the sound this beautiful horn makes throughout the whole range, it's so warm and every note was solid.

I can really understand why George liked this horn during his career. I'm busy doing my research to understand
which recording he would have used this particular Tuning in Bell model for around the mid 1970's.

It's kinda hard to know which models he used during his wonderful career. As far as I'm aware I know there were several Horns he used

Conn 70H TIS ( 1947 - 1961 )
Olds S-22 TIS ( 1961 - 1966 )
Olds S-22 TIB ( 1966 - 1971 )
Olds P-22 TIB ( 1971 - 1979 )
Conn 110H TIB ( 1979 - 2014 )

I plan on doing a home recording with this model and would love some feedback on which Tunes George used this
horn on, so if there is anyone out there could help me

This one is a keeper...... :good:

Thanks, Al

He also played on a Holton TR183; I believe that was in between the S-22 and the P-22.

There's a second stint on a Conn in there (110H?), along with some time on a Yamaha. His last horn was a Kanstul 1670.

P22 is a very good instrument. The P series valves were the best thing around until at least the Yamaha valves in the '80s.
