Live and learn

Post by BrassSection »

Smaller mouthpiece to get high notes easier right? Went from a Bach 12 to a Bach 6.5 on euph. Got the lows I was looking for and highs came easy.

Trumpet, never happy with Bach 12, went to Pickett 1.5 and loving it. More comfortable and good range. Did notice center bore is smaller than the Bach is.

Trombone, wouldn’t trade my 1940s Bach 12SC for anything.

As you have found out, not always true. The cup volume, shape, throat size, backbore shape, and also the horn you are playing it with have a great deal to do with range and feel.

Remember also that your facial structure and the way you play make as big a difference. Sometimes, a “large” mouthpiece work better all over and actually increases a person’s range, while a “small” mouthpiece restrict their range and sound.

Note: It pays to listen to the experts. Euph/tuba player friend recommended a few mouthpieces to try, I was using one for lows and one for highs. 6.5 was a winner.

Trumpet pro buddy said he struggled with finding the right mp. His prof recommended trying Pickett. He’s been hooked ever since. He recommended I go bigger on trumpet, due to the world I live in. (Low brass)
He loaned me two of his, bigger one made me almost like playing trumpet.

I made the statement to a friend that I’m anti social since I don’t do social media. Tuba friend told me I’m anti social because I play trombone…
