Greg Black NY 7 series

Post by Rusty »

Looking for opinions from those who have played GB NY 7 large shank mouthpieces (and variations), and any comments vs the standard GB 5Gs of different depths.

As I understand it, the NY wil have a slightly rounder cushiony rim profile, and standard .281 throat paired with a #1 backbore.

My very subjective opinion. I've spent many years on a NY 5 series mouthpiece. I experimented with moving down to a 5G rim size, so I tried both the GB 5g and the NY 7 series and thought the 5g was a better mouthpiece overall. For some reason, I felt like the NY series didn't work will with the smaller rim. Wasn't a fan of how it felt to play or the response in comparison to the NY 5. I don't know if it was because I struggled with the rim shape at the smaller size or if the smaller size somehow made it out of balance in the dimensions of other areas.

These are pretty easy mouthpieces to find on the used market though so you can play-test yourself without going into the negative upon resale.

I can't compare to variations on the GB 5Gs, but I've cycled through several makes and models of 5Gish pieces over the past year or so. Greg fitted me with a NY 8 (it's grouped with the 7s and listed as a 4G style cup) several months ago when he was visiting a local music store. Definitely been the best fit for me in all my years of playing and I haven't looked back. It has a very comfortable rim and I get great response with it. I do sometimes wonder if I might like a shallower 5G-like cup which appears to be the 7.5. I would definitely like to try one when I have the opportunity. Specs indicate the cup diameter is the same as the GB 5G and slightly larger than a Bach 5G. If you can find a dealer that will let you do I trial, I'd recommend giving them a shot.
