S Mute Pixie Mute

Post by dukesboneman »

I have been playing the Pixie/Plunger combo for the last 50 years.
Using an assortment of Humes & Berg Pixies.
Some better and more responsive than others. And then the corks wear down and it plays like crap.
Well......

The People at S-Mute have come up with a Fantastic Pixie that plays even top to bottom and is incredibly responsive.
I just got mine and am excited about it. Lots of color and nuance and a bit brighter than the H&B Pixie.
It`s worth a look at if you play pixie/plunger at all

I just played mine a little tonight. Very responsive.

I was comparing it to my H&B Pixie, which was altered as described in Al Grey's book. BTW - The S-Mute Pixie construction is similar to the H&B with that extra tube tube removed. The S-Mute Pixie was played as-is out of the box (didn't change corks and left the felt inside where it was).

In addition to what dukesboneman said, as far as intonation goes: My H&B Pixie plays about a 1/4 step or more sharp. The S-Mute Pixie is just slightly sharp.

If you want to lower the pitch a bit more try out the size 1 or 1.5 corks.

And BTW in case folks are wondering, the corks on all of my mutes (apart from the Tuba adapters) are interchangeable, so if you have a Salt Shaker the corks will swap onto the Pixie just fine.
