Rita Payes Equipment?
Does anyone know what type of trombone/mouthpiece combination the Spanish trombonist Rita Payes uses? Her sound (especially in her early work) was sublime. I'm not so interested in the mouthpiece but any info would be appreciated!

Re: Rita Payes Equipment?
I cannot tell trombones apart, only cue off the counterweight and that looks like Kühnl & Hoyer to me, as Aidan said as well. But for the experts among you, here are two full concert videos in high quality tone and resolution from which you may glean more information. I'd be interested to know more. The NPR video is from last year, the WDR Big Band concert from 4 years ago (she was probably 21 around that time) although only posted last year. I love her 2024 album, De Camino Al Camino, which smoothly transitioned between many genres and textures, string quartet, jazz big band.
I own a trombone, playing is a different thing...

Re: Rita Payes Equipment?
That's definitely a K&H.
Seeing the counterweight and the ergonomic handbrace, it's probably a Edith, .525 bore.
The BvL .480/.488 has the same counterweight but not the ergonomic handbrace.
But that's only if it's a stock trombone.

The Edith, really? K&H management must be asleep. Here is the one trombonist in the world that draws large new audiences and could sell more instruments than any other. Rita Payes has probably 1000 listeners for each Bart van Lier listener, the one signature instrument K&H sells. Even years ago should have been an obvious move to get her a signature instruments.claf wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 3:25 pm That's definitely a K&H.

The K&H Edith model is a recent addition and was designed with and for Nils Wogram!

The Edith model according to K&H:
“The Bb tenor trombone is equipped with a large bell (220 mm) and a nickel silver light weight slide (bore 13.4 mm). This brings great tonal flexibility.”

FYI Bart Van Lier has been at the top of his game for decades and is one of the most respected trombonists in Europe. He has appeared on thousands of recordings both as a soloist and section leader.fiddlefestival wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:08 pm

Rita Payes has been around for a heartbeat compared to Bart.
Also Bart has taught many fantastic and now high profile players in Europe for many years.
His affiliation with K&H has led to possibly the biggest sales of their trombones that they’ve had.
Your naivety is somewhat disrespectful to Mr Van Lier I hasten to add

Re: Rita Payes Equipment?
Agree about Bart 100%
But I''ve never liked those BvL models.
So "Edith" is .527 bore, 8 5/8" bell. I'd love to try one.

Maybe they tried and she wasn't interested? She doesn't appear on their featured artist page.fiddlefestival wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:08 pmEven years ago should have been an obvious move to get her a signature instruments.

Me too, Nils Wogram sounds incredible on his Edith, but then he’d sound fantastic on a hose pipe too.Doug Elliott wrote: Tue Apr 08, 2025 9:41 am Agree about Bart 100%

Re: Rita Payes Equipment?
Overall Kühnl and Hoyer does have quite a successful artist approach, at least when looking at their primary market in Central Europe.
Their list includes not only Bart van Lier and Nils Wogram, but also Branimir Slokar (the Slokar trombone line is pretty successful!), others from the Slokar quartet, multiple other trombonists well-known in Germany, Malte Burba and Till Broenner from the trumpet world. Not too bad.

Re: Rita Payes Equipment?
I recently learned about Rita Payes, and had the same question. the Edith was introduced to the public in 2024, but I've seen videos from 2016 where Rita played the same K&H trombone. so might be an older model or custom model? Curious what the bore size is...

Re: Rita Payes Equipment?
upon some further investigation, I found some photos of used K&H BvL .500 and .512 bore trombones with both the curved bell brace and slide brace.

Ok I emailed K&H and they told me that Rita Payes plays the K&H BvL 0.500.
