New guy here with a new to me 2B Silvertone

Post by msterling »

I've been playing Trombone for 61 years so far and have owned a Conn 88H since 1967. I still have stuck with a Remington that came with the horn although I have a Bach 6 1/2 AL that I don't really like.

My amazing wife just gave me a 1938 H.N. White King 2B Silvertone that has been beautifully refurbished. It came with a vintage H.N. White Equa-Tru 28. Which seems to work OK although I'm still just getting used to this small bore horn. I have an Olds 3 and a Schilke 47B that I have used with my 1962 Olds Special.

I am no kind of a pro player. I play in a local Community Wind Band and an offshoot Big Band. I do play first part and get plenty of solos. I think I'll settle in the the 2B before I seriously think about a different mouthpiece and try the three mouthpieces that I have. Any advice from you folks?

The Remington is slightly larger mouthpiece than the 6 ½ AL, and I've never felt that Bach mouthpiece was a good match to the 88H. If the Remington works for you, it's a fine mouthpiece. Also, unless the Bach mouthpiece has a "R" marked on the shank, it doesn't fit the mouthpiece receiver on the 88H properly.

Congratulations on the Silvertone. I'm sure it's a beautiful horn. The Olds 3 may not fit the King receiver. Olds were inconsistent about their mouthpiece receivers and some are smaller than the normal small shank. The Schilke should be a good fit, though. It's a much smaller mouthpiece than your preferred Remington. There is a small shank version of the Remington mouthpiece that might work for you, Maybe someone else remembers the designation of that one, I don't.

2B is not picky at all- it'll work with just about anything.

There is a small shank Remington. I had a plain one that my teacher gave me in High School. There was a Connstellation Remington that was the standard mouthpiece with the 48H (among others).

Same boat, mostly: a "new" 1949 King Silver, and me with new dentition.

Would love to know what you've learned!
