Conn 8H slide to bell connection

Post by Pdev »

Hello there.
My conn 8H slide to bell connection is loose.
What are the options?
Replace the nut?
Anything else?

I tried Doing Elliott's suggestion of using permanent marker on the tenon. I'll be damned if that didn't work. Not a permanent solution, but....

It seems like the loose connection is usually due to the tenon wearing down, not the threads on the nut. So it's worth a shot.

Your problem is that the tenon and/or the receiver socket have worn down a little. Doug's suggestion of painting a Sharpie marker makes the tenon just a little thicker and maybe that's enough. I have seen people use paper shims, brush plate some metal on the tenon, and file off some of the end of the tenon (which only works some of the time). Anything more than the Sharpie or paper shim should be done by a good tech who knows what they are doing.

A more permanent fix (and much more expensive) is to replace either the tenon or the socket (or both).

Usually a combo of the male tenon wearing down AND the bell-side receiver stretching out.

Best bet is to replace both at the same time and it will last you the rest of your career!

Thanks for these great replies folks.
I'll try the Sharpie trick and see what happens.
Out of interest I tried a different 8H slide in the bell and the problem was the same, so I'm guessing that the receiver is a wee bit stretched out rather than it being the tenon on the slide.
I'll report back on any progress in due course.
Thanks again....
