Set back bells? Conn Ballroom, Lawler Model 2?

Post by herrerabone »

Hi all -

I play a Lawler Model 2 with a set-back bell as my small bore. I was wondering if anyone knew of large bore tenor trombones that have a similar bell position that’s set back. I believe the Lawler is about 11 inches from the tip of the mouthpiece to the edge of the bell.

Thanks in advance!

From the archives:
ttf_Doug Elliott wrote: I have kept measurements of that distance for some trombones. Found my chart...
All in inches from the receiver to the bell:

Bach 6-8-12-16: 10.5 to 10.9
Conn small horns: 11.5 to 11.75
Williams 6: 10.5
Olds Recording: 11-3/8
King 2B & 3B: 11-3/8 to 11.5
Yamaha 354: 11.75
Bach 36B & 42B: 10-5/8 to 10-3/4
Conn 88H: 11-5/8

My Schmelzer #1 is the shortest, at 10-3/8
Conns and Yamaha are the longest, at 11-3/4
("Ballroom" Conns are 10.5")

In large bore land, Bachs are close, Holton TR156 is 10.625 (but the 159 is 11.5 ...), Yamaha YSL 820GII is 10.75 (don't know if the US market Xenos are the same), Rath R4 is 11.

Anything between 10 (some Holton basses) and 12 (more or less anything made by Besson) is possible.

There's no standard, and it's wrong to assume that most large bores are going to be 11.5 like a 3B.

I like a set back bell... better balance for the same mass, and more feedback. Unless you're an inveterate bell-toucher in 3rd, I don't see any disadvantages.
