Kanstul Alan Kaplan model 1602B
Is anyone familiar with the Kanstul 1602B trombone…the Kaplan model.
I understand it comes in different bore options: .491/.500, .491 and straight .500.

Yep , although I think 500 was what I saw it most in.
I had one at one time , nice horns. Anything in particular you want to know about them?

Is the bell gauge lighter than that of the other small bore Kanstul horns?

We lost a lot with the passing of Zig Kanstul. He did so much for so many trombonists! Unfortunately, Kanstul Musical Instruments was to some extent a one-man show.

I remember I had such a horn at home on loan to evaluate but settled on a Kanstul 1555. I found it a bit strange, but it was of course me. It did not fit me.

The bell is light but not as light for production as the one they made for Kaplan ,
Light bell , light quick slide , responded nicely but like the above comment I liked the 1555 a bit better and kept it over the 1602
It was a very nice playing instrument though with a great upper register just a bit brighter / lighter sound than I wanted

When did production stop at the factory? How long were they still in operation after Zig passed away?

Zig passed in October of 2016. Word of major layoffs at Kanstul started filtering out in early 2019 (just a couple weeks after the NAMM show).gregwaits wrote: Mon May 15, 2023 8:16 am When did production stop at the factory? How long were they still in operation after Zig passed away?

And well before the layoffs, production was less than smooth.JohnL wrote: Mon May 15, 2023 9:46 amZig passed in October of 2016.
