New Horn Day - Thein Bass

Post by Arvopart17 »

Played it for about 2 hours so far and couldn’t be happier. Did I really need this? No. Am I talented enough to warrant this? Absolutely not! Does it make me happy inside? You betcha!

Some people buy sports cars when they hit middle age :) at least I can play this year round in New England, you can’t say that for a convertible.

This plays so easily, I love Hagmann valves. The horn just feels alive in my hands.

Very, very nice!!

Congrats to both a great looking horn, and the wise spending of your money.

I hope you get many, happy years of playing it, and much great music from it.

Congrats!

Did you pick up at ATW?

What leadpipe did you end up going with?

It’s a “used” instrument, but I’d be hard pressed to tell. It came with a NY L Z leadpipe. Thein pipes are confusing! The one I have appears to be a two-piece with a yellow brass top 2/3 and what looks like a nickel pipe attached for the last 1/3 of the length. For the life of me it looks like a normal NY leadpipe with an extension added onto it to make it a L (long). I would like to eventually try one of the U bass pipes, but for now I’m enjoying it as is.

NY L Z is a great pipe, that’s the one I was in until just recently.

Most of the “branding” can be confusing because a lot of it is designed with a specific player in mind. That pipe was I believe one of Zach’s he helped develop.

Also! I’d highly recommend two “no space” valve caps. Really changed the horn for me in a really great way.

Gorgeous instrument! Only tried Thein once in a noisy ITF hall. Would love to try one again in a quieter space.

What mouthpiece are you playing with this leadpipe? I have a universal I on trail with the same leadpipe. I find the sound to spread and response suffering with amrican shank mpcs

Thein BM. It s ok, but I need a larger rim. My Doug Elliott rim is 115

Unless I'm misunderstanding you why not try a Thein with the same rim size as your DE? Doug can probably advise you and make a shank for you for your DE piece if you like it so much.

I had the Thein BM threaded so that the Elliott LB rims fit. Works very well!

What cups and shanks did you play from Doug and how did you find them compared to the thein BM?

I've often thought about having a Thein BM and a JK Klier Cieslik Special converted to fit the LB rims.

For me it is not the cups as such that make a difference. I have the LB J and L cups. With the 10 shank. The Thein mouthpiece is longer and has a different taper in the shank (goes in further down the leadpipe). And that makes all the difference in response and resonance.

Forgot to add that the design of the throat and backbore is different from typical American mouthpieces. The cups are relatively shallow, but they still feel wide open. Even to a point that they can seem unfocused/ hard to slot on American made trombones. Good to mention btw my Thein is quite German, it is like a BVD model but then dependent.

Looks slick! That Thein BM looks pretty shallow for a bass piece.
