Madness - Ordered a New Edwards 302T

Post by RobDorsey »

Greetings All,
Just ordered a new Edwards 302T in satin finish from Christan. It's not like I don't have enough horns to play (I have 8), but I am intrigued by the reviews, and Christan is an absolute trombone guru. I ordered both the straight .500 slide and a .500/.508 slide to compare. I will return the loser.

Current hardware list is:
Conn 8H
King 3BSS
Olds Deluxe (1933)
Bach 42
Conn 88H (1965)
Yamaha 651
Reynolds Special Deluxe in Sterling with gold highlights (c1942)
E F Dunham .547 straight horn, nickel
Edwards 302T .500 (on order)

MTbassbone,
About six weeks. I should have it in mid-March.

Dang that's fast. I am currently on the wait list for a bass and was told 10 months.

Valves are probably the holdup.

Yeah, and also just the amount of time it takes to put together the whole valve section, vs a straight neckpipe. I see a LOT of Edwards and Getzen basses around, and rarely see them available used, so I can see why production is backed up.

Plus I'd wager that, with the exception of the bell, the components are 90% shared with the Getzen 3508Y. (Maybe even the bell if OP ordered a popular combination  )

I think the "madness" translates to, "My god, what have I done?!"

Yes, in this case, "madness" means "oh god, what have I done?" Certainly the most expensive trombone I've ever bought. The horn has arrived and it is lovely. Certainly the best slide out of the ten in my "forest" of trombones. It is a .500 horn but sounds like a much larger bore. I got the satin finish and it is cool, a matter of taste to be sure.
Excellent response, medium dark sound and no "bark" when you bear down on a phrase. Truly a jazz horn. I have tried for years to achieve a JJ sound and now have given that up. Truth is, I sound like me regardless of the horn or mouthpiece I play on, and I don't sound bad. I had to make a major mouthpiece change due to some major dental work that altered my embouchure. After 60 years of playing trombone, it has been a real effort and has moved me from a Reynolds to a Conn 2 or other 24.50mm cup. Still get my sound and it doesn't feel small anymore. Funny though. If I try to play the Reynolds now, it's like opening a window and playing the world.
