Eastman ETB528 vs. Getzen 725 Eterna II

Post by unvar »

Currently own a Getzen 725 Eterna II (.525″/.547″ dual bore), I am looking to sell it and buy a large bore open wrap trombone, currently looking at an Eastman ETB528 (edit: used) that I found for a really good price, but it's too far away to try playing before it I buy. I have done some research on the horn and found this review on it: seems like a great horn and I love the sound from what I heard. Wondering if anyone has any insight on the 528, or any thoughts about my plans.

I'm relatively new to looking for trombones (the Getzen was my first real trombone purchase), so any advice or insight would be much appreciated!

Unless you need a new instrument specifically, it's probably best to buy a used Conn 88H or Bach 42 of some sort.

The 528 is used and is way cheaper than the Conn 88H/Bach 42's I have seen online (less than half the price), do you think I should just save the money and go with one of those in the future?

To be honest, I’d probably stick with the getzen unless/until it becomes an impediment and you know the horn you’re switching to works better for you. And even then, the bell is probably pretty good and might only want a different slide. 525/547 is underrated though, imo. Especially if you can get a large shank leadpipe in it but I don’t think your model has removable pipes by default.

The Eastman wouldn’t hold as much value as the getzen i feel

Question: Would any .547 slide work with my Getzen? Or would I need to specifically look for a Getzen .547 slide?

Getzen slides should work. Iirc a conn 88 would work as well. You might want to make a thread specifically asking the question. Lengths might be different which can affect intonation. You can also get something else and swap out the tenon. Getzen parts are reasonably easy to get your hands on.

I think a Getzen .547 slide would fit with that horn. You might want to look for a whole new (or lightly used) Getzen .547 bore horn. They are good instruments.

Those dual bore horns are nice too. I had two younger students make good progress on one of those horns. The first one sold it to the second student when he upgraded to a .547, and the 2nd one may have also sold it to a young student when he moved on to a bigger horn.

I'll make a new thread regarding the slide question, I may still buy the Eastman 528 if it is significantly cheaper than replacing the slide (or maybe ill just hold my cards for now). Thanks everyone!

As someone who sees Getzens and Eastmans in student's hands regularly, I'd vote for the Eastman. .525 horns just aren't very popular (even if they should be) and Eastman large bore horns have impressed me every time I've picked one up. They pop up around here for less than $500 relatively frequently. I always recommend them to kids who are likely to be all-staters but are unlikely to have the $$$ for a used 88h etc. The sad part is that the Eastman's tend to play better than used Bach 42 or Conn 88h's.

I might be interested in your 725 Getzen slide if you do upgrade.

Any Getzen .547" slide should work for you if you want to upgrade the slide. The 428G plays really well for the money if you want a budget horn. However, for not much more you should be able to get a Getzen 1047F or 1047FR. The 1047F(R) is a great playing horn and usually they aren't very expensive used.
