Two reasons...just in case you're not kidding.

1-The danger of being injured by alla those blasting tubas, euphs and what ever the hell else they were using to do the Busby Berkeley thing. Deafening, even on my computer speakers.

2-Equally deafening...? The amplification on Harry's solo.

3-Potentially life-threatening corn allergies.

I mean...when Gene Krupa played those drum solos, he made something /happen!!! And the Goodman band was swinging its collective ASS off. 16 or so world-class jazz players.

A 50+ member wind ensemble?

I don't THINK so.

And then there was Benny Goodman.

No slouch either, if y'know what I mean.

Plus...it was new then. The chart, the idiom, the music. Alive.

Now it's more like corn-fed canned ham. The kind that has lots of preservatives.

I understand that Harry is just doing his job and all...great playing, in that style...but really. We **** and moan about how no one pays attention to the trombone, and then people stay away in droves when we do something like this. The view from the balcony near the end of this video attests to the fact that it wasn't just the front seats that were empty.

I read that and thought I remembered that I was there and blown away by Jim's playing, which was great by any standard, and even more so for a 17 year old freshman at Juilliard. Note that he's playing a stock Bach 42...everyone's choice for pep band these days!),  but the amazing part was what came next...Lindberg suggesting something musical, and Jim able to immediately incorporate exactly what he suggested, without a second thought.  Lindberg demonstrating something on the trombone, and Jim matching him, and even surpassing him a little.  Eventually, Lindberg ran out of things to say, and Jim had this innocent, "cool...what else?" look on his face. It was a great afternoon. No wonder he's achieved what he has at his advanced age of 30 or so.

Yes'm, that's an Olds TIS!  He's playing the same horn on some Eddie Condon videos and on the "This is Jazz" movie/special too.  It was Dickenson's main axe for many years.  Cool, eh?

And...as I have been saying, they are amazing axes. I have 4 now. The best one...for me, for semi-practical use in some situations...is a dual bore that appears to be around .500/.515.
