The thing that bugs me most about this is that she can really play!! Great sound!!

I know...it's all about "the show" and all that, but haven't we evolved a LITTLE bit past this kind of thing? If she just went out there and played the heck out of that piece...or if the bandleader still did her slide without making kiss-kiss and stuff, the audience might just hear a great player and enjoy THAT. Did he REALLY have to slap her rear right at the end of it?!...JEEZ!!

This technique was developed in Germany after WWI, as a means to permit veterans with chops and no arms, and arms but no chops, to continue to play their beloved Volksmusik.

As regards whether we've evolved passed the stage of slapping women's behinds in public, understand that these sorts of Volksmusik shows in Europe are still fairly wide-spread (on TV), and make the Lawrence Welk Show look downright sophisticated.

watch some of the other videos of this band.
the director has a really unique way of directing.

it is all about being entertaining, isn't it. figuring out ways to fill the chairs, and all of the chairs are filled, so they must be doing something right.

Thanks Wes for finding and sharing that.

:pant:What can you say about John Allred? He's amazing! Always swinging! He's my favorite of the younger (under 45) generation of jazz boners. I had the pleasure of having him in my band for a night. We had to play on the Intrepid in New York on a Tuesday night for a school fundraiser, and I needed a sub. Let's see, all of New York on a Tuesday...whom should I get? I'll try for the guy I dig the most. And John was available.

Needless to say, we brought every piece of music that had a solo in his part, and at the end all the bones soloed on "Things Ain't What They Used To Be." What a joy. Marvelous player and a great person, too. I wish him all the best!

I don't like it,though I do like her playing.

That's one of the things I sort of don't want to endure in the clubs. I heard all the stories from my mom about how the women horn players back in the day in L.A. and the Bay Area got treated, and this video brought back images of the sexism they had to deal with.

Unfortunately, sex sells, and it's at the expense of serious musicianship...and the dollar. Image

Hi Andy,
i have the whole of this gig on video which i took from the German channel 3Sat, a channel which shows jazz every Friday & Saturday late.
John's big feature on this gig was Rosolino's "Violets".......... I cried it was so good!!!

He doesn't have the high profile he deserves because Joe Public wouldn't know a master solo craftsman if he smacked em in the face!!!

Does any trombonist get to be a super star these days? I think he is about as high profile as you can get.

Understandably, there is a lot of Bill in his playing.

Gees, wasn't that Warren Vache flugel something else again! I just love unashamed 'hot' players with techniques to kill for. But they have all paid their dues.

Thanks for the nice comments about my MySpace video.  I wish he caught some of the tenor trading- though it might be against the rules to post it here!

Man, Wes... the guy is moving her slide for her !?!?.... then the bottom-pat at the end of the tune- IN FRONT OF EVERYONE???  Maybe a little cultural "tongue-in-cheek" entertainment, but I sure wouldn't want to be the cat explaining this to people.

I played it for my significant other ( who is a superb alto saxophonist in NYC) and she burnt a hole in my chest with a laser-beam emanating from her eye with one of the fiercest angry-stares I've ever received.

She can play the trombone for sure.  I enjoyed her sound.

John Allred- what can you say?  Swinging, soulful, means every note he plays, humble.  That's a baaaaaad dude.  He's got some marvelous influences that jump out of his sound and rhythm- Louis, Big Tea, Prez, JJ, Rosolino, Fontana, Bobby Hackett... many many more.  I dig everybody on that video though, especially Warren Vache and all his smooth stuff.

Good musicians, playing notes correctly, but the "accent" is wrong; at least jazz players have enough sense not to try to play Mahler, orchestral players just can't help themselves in searching for repertoire, though it seems...

Chip and all,

Here are more clips from the same Steve Allen show...I am thinking they are from around '82 or '83. I'll ask around...it's basically Terry Gibbs' band. He was Steve Allen's music director for many years.

All these things have a "tv" sound quality to them [bad balance, weird mix, many will find the electric bass annoying--but do check out his LINES!!] and the tune choices are all about prime time [ie, rather pedestrian and corny!], but as it is with this kind of thing...there are still lots of good things to hear and enjoy here anyway!

To answer your questions about players, Chip. Here are my guesses...

Chuck Berghoffer on bass

I think it might be John Leys on bass bone.

The other ww's are Gus Bivona [2nd alto and flute] and one of my former mentors, the late Bill Green on bari and flute.

Here is Plas Johnson playing his "signature tune", "Pink Panther". Check out Pete C's typically sassy lead trumpet on the bridge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBupII3LH_Q&feature=related

And Sarah Vaughn and the band's in the pocket version of "Just Friends"!!! Nice chart--might be Broadbent's...?

Bone files: check out a fleeting but VERY good example of Charlie's trademark lead bone playing behind Med's alto solo around 1:47! I'd bet big bucks the tiny fall he puts on that F on the "and" of two in the fourth bar was NOT marked!  Image.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPBqNDjFTj8&feature=related

LX

PS...

===SOAP BOX ALERT===

Incidentally, the only "scatting" SV does here is on a unison line around :52 [insert sigh of relief here  Image], but her ability to improvise on the melody and lyrics is so deep. Why is this element so foreign to so many of today's prominent jazz vocalists?!?!
