I think it should probably work either way if we put our minds to it. That recording is close to 30 years old.

Whenever I do any kind of a search on the internet for anything about jazz and trombones, I get bombarded with Nils Landgren YouTubes. But, you know, he grows on you and I find myself selecting more and more of the tunes he does and playing them in a similar style. I even like his tone, although I think it is sometimes spoiled by the electronics he hangs of the back of his trombone.

Then there are his vocals...... Image But, to tell the truth, they also get you in after a while. I guess I have become a bit of a fan:

"Sentimental Journey":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgcP-4orhgk

"One Day I'll Fly Away", with Joe Sample who wrote it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCItZ0RJmmc

"Killing Me Softly":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35lyTYabAZo&playnext=1&list=AL94UKMTqg-9Baq3vBbIS4GcJCawOJ8vt-

"Oh, You Crazy Moon":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4cIG_VnRxw&list=AL94UKMTqg-9Baq3vBbIS4GcJCawOJ8vt-

"There Goes My Heart":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vzEYGyxL4g&list=AL94UKMTqg-9Baq3vBbIS4GcJCawOJ8vt-

"Moon River":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Rw0Uea0oJk&list=AL94UKMTqg-9Baq3vBbIS4GcJCawOJ8vt-

I am not too keen on the funk unit and the jump suit, however. Image

Wow, he kicks some serious ass, you can hear elements of about 60 years of jazz styles all at once, and yet he still sounds completely original.

That is an absolutely gorgeous tune and arrangement featuring trombone. I was thinking of getting it from eJazz Lines for a bargain $51.

http://www.ejazzlines.com/c246/ARRANGED-BY-ROB-MCCONNELL-JUST-TELL-ME-YES-OR-NO-p46201.html

However, I am a bit worried about all that doubling in the saxes, because that is the essence of the backing and not many of the sax players in my local bands can play those instruments. Image It is very disappointing that not many reed players double these days.

I think big band music is really going to miss Rob McConnell's input. The Boss Brass was always the natural progression for big band arranging, to my ears. It just sounds right somehow. Image

Hey Bellend, I think "nice solo from Alistair Kay" is a bit of an understatement. Image

A Digital Age Parable or How I Found Hal

I have a confession to make. I have never, not once, listened to anything that Hal Crook has recorded.

Tonight I was cooking dinner and had itunes shuffling in the other room. A Phil Woods Quintet track came on and the trombone player was someone whose playing I didn't recognize. I googled and found out it was Hal Crook. So I searched youtube for 'Hal Crook' and this was the first result that was professionally recorded. And now I pass it on to you.

Holy smokes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1Al11HpezI

Anyway it made me think a moment about the nature of continuing to explore and refine one's own musical tastes, particularly as a performing musician. Just fifteen (and really less than ten) years ago I wouldn't have been able to interact with the internet in the way I did tonight. I might NEVER HAVE HEARD A NOTE of Hal Crook's playing in a lifetime. It's definitely a good thing that I did. I still can't decide if the larger impact of that ease of navigation through vast piles of information is really good for us or not.

Thanks for posting this!
Is this the same arrangement as for euphonium, or is there a version adapted for trombone?

I believe it is the Andrew Glover arrangement for euphonium and band by Simone Mantia.

Larry is playing trombone and has taken some liberties with tempos and added some notes
Ala "cadenza improvisations". He also has opted to take a couple second endings.

Not really trombone related but there is a very funny introduction to this song on UK folk singer, Vin Garbutt's 'Plugged" album - nicely sung also.

I was searching for the Russ Morgan clip of "So Tired" and found these videos (film clips) where Russ plays a few licks on his trombone on some of the tunes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=698es5I1mmU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNs3ndC_eRg

Hey, I know it is corny but his band was very popular 'way back when' and I always liked it. Russ's use of mutes was particularly interesting.

And that's my kind of vibrato! Image

An interesting and humorous version of 'Peanut Vendor' by German Brass, ably demonstrating all the different types of trombone:

"German Brass" is a brass ensemble founded in 1974. The group is well known as the top brass ensemble in Germany.
