Happy Birthday on Christmas Day!

Post by ttf_Graham Martin »

A few December 25th jazz birthdays to celebrate; most notably that of Kid Ory. "Ory had one of the best-known bands in New Orleans in the 1910s, hiring many of the great jazz musicians of the city, including the cornetists Joe "King" Oliver, Mutt Carey, and Louis Armstrong, who joined the band in 1919; and the clarinetists Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone." He was also responsible for creating the essence of the “tailgate trombone” style in New Orleans Jazz. Image

Pete Rugolo was not a trombonist but did start his music career on baritone horn, which is close enough. Image More importantly, he was one of my favourite arrangers of all time, after WW2 writing most of the book for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, which was one of the most musically progressive big bands of the era. Also notable to trombonists for creating the arrangements for the album "The Four Freshmen and Five Trombones", which is one of my favourite recordings of all time. Image Rugolo also wrote arrangements foe my favourite female vocalist June Christie, including her albums, 'Something Cool', 'The Misty Miss Christy', 'Fair and Warmer!', 'Gone for the Day' and 'The Song Is June!'.

List of Jazz Musicians with birthday on 25th December:

1886: Kid Ory
1907: Cab Calloway
1913: Tony Martin
1915: Pete Rugolo
1920: Jane Morgan
1927: Ernie Andrews

Another December 25 birthday: William Bell (tuba) 1902.  Anybody who has ever gone to a Tuba Christmas knows who he is.  Played in the New York Philharmonic in the Pulis/Van Haney/Ostrander days.
