The End All, Be All Free Sheet Music thread

Keeping to works legally within the public domain, and only from trusted websites, list your favorite freely available works for trombone, trombone + piano, trombone + orchestra, et cetera here.

Give a description of the piece if possible, including such details as composer, length, overall style (staccato and bombastic? Lyrical and flowing? Technical?), and skill level.

Also, note if you've ever actually played it yourself, or ask questions about other pieces you happen to find. I'm looking at starting work on this trombone concerto I found by Willy Ostyn on Free-Scores.com (I believe it's legit, if it's not just delete the URL).

Tenor clef, good mix between technical, high and low range and run syncopation.

The only problem is that it seems as though the midi sample was done with a tenor sax not a tenor trombone. I'll load the PDF into Finale and fix that for myself though.

Seems like every time I turn around somebody wants a compendium of places to find free music.

Do a little homework.

What are you looking for?

You can get free sheet music from the Library of Congress, American Memory site (look it up yourself).
You can get free sheet music from the IMSLP group.  Including a lot of orchestral parts (but not every one!).
Many of the smaller publishers often have free samples on their sites.  DennisK (Anthem Press) often has some stuff for free.
There are colleges and universities that have dedicated sites with free music.  I found that Boise State has a site with all the music by Sir Arthur Sullivan, for example.  I found it by searchin on "Arthur Sullivan".

Will you find a copy of the Motorbike Concerto?  Probably not.  I don't think it's even available on Tarrodi except by purchase.

Good luck.

I was just hoping to make this thread a repository for various pieces of potentially unknown or little known repertoire for tenor or bass.

Personally, I'd be interested in grabbing a solo of some sort for bass bone focusing on the single trigger and higher double-trigger notes, because I've been playing more bass than tenor recently, but have only really worked on solo repertoire for my tenor playing.

But, yeah- mainly, I was thinking that folks could use this thread to post interesting, free (LEGAL!)sheet music they might have run across or written just to help it get out there.

On the topic of solo-works- I've found the Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto, the Ropartz Piece for Trombone and Piano, and Saint-Saens Cavatine, of the standard "Trombone solo works on IMSLP", for people looking to find some new solos to practice (I'm not sure of the legal ramifications of using them for performance? Could be that you'd want to write your own cadenza, because even if the notes of the piece itself aren't copyrighted, the cadenzas may be?)

Also, Mozart's Bassoon Concerto is on there, which is a very fun little solo/exercise for making scale practice and interval jump practice somewhat less tedious.

This is a treasure-trove of mainly classical music for all sorts of orchestrations and ensembles, including many of the beautiful classical brass music- Gabrieli, etc.

The scores are PDF, and many pieces have MIDI files and Finale source files of the scores.

This is not legal.  A University may make sheet music available to its students but as soon as it is revealed to the general public it's copyright violation.

Robinsjanis, I know you are on a limited budget and it's tough to find music in Latvia, but you really need to understand that the stuff you want was somebody's hard work and they expect to be paid for it.

I know of course that composers earn money for that. I have not discovered our Latvian Academy of Music library.

If those sites are "free", then why do we have to add items to a cart and then why do we have to jump through some registration hoops? When I have to give up information, I don't regard the product as truly being "free".

Here are some truly free sheet music downloads:

No Registration Required

Are there others where no registration nor any homage to be paid is required?

While it does require registration, there is a cool website/app called chromatik that offers a large selection of free sheet music. An eclectic collection of repertoire that you can access using the web or the app on iPad and iPhone. I've found it pretty useful. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/1pgnnoA

While it might be perfectly okay, but I am leery of a website advocated by someone in his very first post (especially with a shortened URL that I can't tell where it goes to).  Exercise caution!

No offense intended to the poster.
