Urbie Green needs our help. He is 91 now and faces some serious medical bills. If you play trombone, you have to know what Urbie has meant to all of us.

This is not a hoax. Go to https://www.gofundme.com/UrbieGreen and donate whatever you can. Besides being quite possibly the best trombonist ever, Urbie is also one of the sweetest, humblest men I know. Do it now!

Thanks!

The government and general social culture cannot now be counted upon to take care of anyone, even someone who has been as successful and contributed so much to the culture as has Urbie. It's up to friends and family, for all of us.

Be a friend.

Please.

Thanks...

I hope politics can stay out of this thread. Real charity is not dead. I tried to help save the Brass Lab last year but it wasn't enough. Doesn't mean I didn't help out those guys though. There are plenty of good people out there and a little charity from a lot of good people goes a long way. Thanks for bringing this topic up!

I owe Urbie for a lifelong appreciation for the trombone...I think we all do. Cough up, you can do without a week's worth of $5 sugar-coffees to help him out.

Unfortunately, HTR, "politics"...and the monetization of human health and life that has been supported by both major political parties under the direction/compulsion of massive financial support by Big Insurance, Big Pharma and Big Med...cannot "stay out of this thread."

Sorry...

I am old enough to be able to remember when working class and middle class people could reasonably expect fairly high-level medical care at a price that they could afford to pay. Those days are gone forever. Urbie's plight...and the plight of so many other U.S. citizens who never made nearly as much as did Urbie Green (nor did they contribute nearly as much to the culture)...is mainstream business now. Social Security and pensions are presently under serious attack by the bipartisan, duoparty Permanent Government, and the .01% that controls most of the money and power in this country could care less.

"Let'em eat cake, if they can afford it. If they can't? The hell with them. We have robots that can do their work."

Find me a robot who can produce the depth of musical feeling that Urbie in his prime could produce on an easily acquired, stock King trombone and I will reconsider my position.

Until then?

Are you still in the armed forces? Are you still believing that the VA will take care of you in the future because of your service?

WTFU.

They aren't even taking care of the people who got their minds essentially shot out in combat.

This is all about "politics."

Unfortunately, the "GoFundMe" page appears to be out of order.  I have tried to donate with 3 different credit cards, and all 3 contributions were denied.  Does anyone know how to get around this problem? I've run out of credit cards!  Urbie is one of my heroes, and I want to help!

It's alarming that conservative media turned the "old enough to know better" set into the "too old to know better" crowd.

It's alarming that people who should be old enough to know better are falling for and rewteeting the "both sides do it" stuff on retirement programs.

Social Security, Medicare... not perfect and they do cost money but those are Democrat-passed and defended programs that fill in a gaping hole in the finances of retirees. There was not a golden age of carefree retirement before those programs.

If those programs aren't adequate now it's not because Democrats have spent 50+ years trying to weaken them and creating problems to force them to failure.

I'm also pretty sure that military combat injuries and the VA are not Urbie Green's difficulty right now.

I had no trouble a couple of days ago. Have you tried doing it on another computer or using another browser?

The Democratic Party and the Republican Party are now owned and operated by the same corporate forces, robcat. A cursory look at the monetary support of almost every major national politician makes that a plain fact. The "Democrats" of 50 years ago were still New Deal people, by and large. Those today are not. The two parties talk a good game, but when push comes to shove in the back rooms they are essentially in agreement. Too many people, too little work. Result? A planned die-off as far as I can see. Worldwide as well as in the U.S.

All's well around the DC beltway though.

Bipartisan theft.

Of course not. But they are a symptom of the same problem that is now besetting Urbie Green in old age. The country is now no longer taking care of its people. It makes big noises about its intentions and each party blames the other for what's going on, but the carnage continues. It's as simple as that. You will see no GoFundMe pleas for sitting Senators or House of Representatives members. Bet on it.

RE: The Urbie Green Fund.  Consider this ---- Urbie gave us a gift that cannot be repaid --- but let's try !

I'd also like to comment on a post about the Veteran's Administration : I'm a vet who has nothing but good things to say about my experiences with the VA.  They have been pro-active about my care, very efficient in the administration of that care and respectful of every vet's service.  My 91 year old Father-in-Law is a WWII vet and receives a rare medication from the VA that would have bankrupted him had he been forced to pay for it himself @ $16,000 -- a MONTH !  The VA, of course, has the right to negotiate drug prices --- unlike the Affordable Care Act, which is forbidden by law to negotiate drug prices and brings even more participants than the VA to the table.  Guess whose lobbyists negotiated that little perk ?  I know that the VA has had its scandals and there have been reports of slow or complicated claims, but those have been addressed by a program called "Veteran's Choice" wherein any veteran living more than 40 miles from a VA clinic --- or any veteran not able to get the necessary care from a specialist at the VA, has the "Veteran's Choice" to receive care from a participating civilian doctor. What's not to like ? I believe that's an idea from our Canadian friends and their socialized medicine.   I just thought I'd get that out there.   Cheers !!

There's this thread as well (regarding Julian Priester):

http://tromboneforum.org/index.php/topic,103141.0.html

Regarding the politics of this, given the political events of this past weekend, it's pretty hard not to conclude that things are only going to get worse in the US. Many more people will have difficulties affording health care insurance and as the overall accumulated deficit grows, entitlements such as Medicaid will be cut back. There will be some economic growth, for which the politicians will take credit, but, as these things usually go, the benefits will be distributed unequally, and I suspect the 1% will get the lion's share.

My aunt moved to the US back in the 40s after meeting a dashing young American serviceman. They both worked for years. She was a nurse. He worked in construction. They had a nice house on a lake, near Seattle. Always a late model car, usually a Cadillac. He probably built much of the I-5 in Washington State. She was a career nurse and should have had a comfortable pension. No children. My aunt proudly became a American citizen.

But, they were convinced that either there was going to be a nuclear holocaust or, alternatively, there would be a massive earthquake. They bought land near Sandpoint, near a national forest, where, after the big one hit, they would move there and live off the land.

My uncle passed away from a heart attack in the early 80s.

My aunt carried on. But, it turned out, they had been so convinced that the big one was inevitable, they'd opted out of their pensions. In her early 80's, she developed a form of leukemia that required regular blood transfusions that weren't covered by her government medical benefits. At one point, she asked me to inquire about returning to Canada for medical reasons. The woman I spoke to at Immigration was unsympathetic.

After my aunt died, we went down to sort through her things. The house on the lake, the Cadillac, the gowns - everything was long gone. All the money had gone to medical expenses. She had been living in a small, run down manufactured home (like a trailer, only without the wheels). The roof leaked, and there was mildew and mould everywhere. There was nearly nothing left. One step from being homeless basically.

Not an unusual story, it seems, and, to be fair, maybe it was her own fault. But it struck me as a pretty heartless and cruel end.

Thanks for sharing this. I just donated.

Urbie was a guest artist when I was in high school. I got to play several of the "21 Trombones" numbers with him. A couple of years later I met him at an International Trombone Association conference. He is just the nicest guy you could ever meet. And of course an incredible player! I am honored to be able to pitch in to help out at this difficult time for him.

And I agree that this is evidence that we really need to figure out how to revamp our health care system in this country. And of course the only way to do that is for people in BOTH parties to get together and be able to have serious, respectful conversations. I hope to see that happen again someday.

Listening to some vinyls i got for Christmas reminded me to donate.  Received a sweet note from the family.

I don't have anything substantive to add to the discussion; just wanted to bump the thread in hopes of reminding others who wanted to support Urbie but forgot to do so with all of the holiday bustle.

Likewise just keeping this bobbing along so more people may donate. I just did. What a legend this man is and coming from a country where I dont have to worry about any medical bills, I thought I should. We may complain about the efficiencies of our NHS system but stories like this make me realise how blessed we are in the UK!
