Looking for Small Brass Feature to Add to a Mid-Summer Night's Concert

Post by StevenC »

We're planning a Mid-Summer Night's concert for small orchestra. We do have three trombones, but not all that much for the trombones to do. It has been suggested that I come up with a small brass feature in keeping with the Mid-Summer theme or even maybe a baroque fanfare. I'm not really coming up with something that works. I am looking for suggestions. Thanks!

Do you have a full brass section (3 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, and tuba)?

Dukas' Fanfare from La Peri might work.

Or for that matter, Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man". Requires some serious percussion: tymps, bass drum, gong.

The Dukas should work (depending on how many horns we have around this summer). I don't think the Copland is the right mood for the rest of the concert. Thanks!
