Must see/listen in New York

Post by SwissTbone »

Hey

I will be in New York in april 2019. What is a must see?

I am particularly looking for great music, especially interested in a club where I can hear a great Big Band or some latin music. But everything else music related is welcome, even classical :-)

Broadway?

Any great music stores I should visit?

For great stores you are probably 50 years too late. 48th street between 6th and 7th avenues USED to be the place to go. Not so any more. Seems the great store to go to is in New Jersey just outside New York; Dillon Music.

There are a few good places to catch jazz and I hope some of our regulars can chime in with gigs upcoming. I used to like Greenwich Village and in particular a place called the Village Gate, but I haven't been there in quite a few years.

For classical music, Lincoln Center is the place to go. You have the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, New York City Ballet. There is also a great music library with recordings you can listen to (Library and Museum of the Performing Arts) and check ot nearby Juilliard Music School to see if there are any recitals/performances.

If Orquesta SCC (https://www.facebook.com/Orquesta.SCC/) is playing a gig you need to go see them. They are a Salsa Dura band, and I recently saw them at the Lowell Folk Festival. The whole band is awesome, and the horn section (two trombones & two trumpets) is a great salsa horn section.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, will look into those bands!

Are there any clubs where I can go without worrying to much about security and still being sure there will be great music?

Security? I've never had a security concern in any of the Jazz clubs or other funky, little clubs around lower Manhattan or Brooklyn.

When it gets closer to your visit, let us know if you want more specific recommendations, or maybe a native guide.

David Gibson plays regularly, sometimes with the George Gee big band.
Great player, also fun gig if you like watching swing dancers.
Also Zinc Bar.
Sometimes you can catch Frank Lacy playing a jam at Smalls.
