Anechoic Chamber == Madness?

Post by robcat2075 »

You've probably heard of the super-quiet rooms that are built to test audio factors... the anechoic chambers... rooms so quiet that mere minutes inside will drive one to madness...
...Much of the lore about the chamber’s propensity for mind-annihilation centers on the concept of blood sounds...

Hearing the movement of blood through the body is supposedly something like an absolute taboo, akin to witnessing the fabrication of Chicken McNuggets — an ordeal after which placid existence is irreparably shattered.

An NYT reporter has risked her sanity to bring you the unsound facts, on the record...

Fascinating essay.

Imagine what it would be like to sit in the chamber if you had tinnitus.

The engineering department where I went to college had one. It was interesting to go into the chamber. Very similar to putting your fingers in your ears in a quiet room. I would describe it as a noisy silence.
