Doug, are you in this video? At around 1:02:00 minute mark, there's a tune with a trombone soloist that looks like you!

Yes that's me.... and my Yamaha 354.
Not too long after I got in the band.

I was also wondering that too... it sounds great!

I'm going to show this to my student that you met over the summer the next time he complains that he doesn't like the sound of his 354 and thinks he needs a new horn...

Great playing! Great tune/arrangement as well. What tune is it?

Children of the Night, by Wayne Shorter, arranged by Mike Crotty.
I never got comfortable playing that tune.

Just ran into another album I'm on, from before I was in the Note. Bill Potts big band - I'm pretty sure this was recorded in 1985, and I think the entire album was done in single takes, live in the studio. The trombone solos are me first, then John Jensen, and then trading. Dave Steinmeyer was playing lead. Lee Gause was on bass trombone.

Again on my Yamaha 354. Sounds just like a trombone.

That's it. My playing was a bit rougher then...

Who is playing lead trumpet in that recording? It sounds great. I'm not sure you could miss anything with that kind of lead trumpet playing happening.

It was Kenny Smukal, who was lead trumpet in the Note for a lot of years, before I was in. I did play in Mike Cotty's band and Bill Potts's band with him in the years before. He was THE BEST lead player; you're right, you couldn't miss anything with him leading. Steinmeyer was the same way, and the combination of the two of them was an unbelievable force. I consider myself very lucky to have experienced them and I try to model my playing after that.
