Help! Size of Olds P-24G water key cork??

Post by LeoInFL »

Beginning of rehearsal I noticed I couldn't play anything above mp. Discovered my water key cork was disintergrating.. Are trombone cork sizes all the same or do they vary? What size will work with my Olds P-24G bass?

Thanks in advance!

Corks on trombone water keys are usually 12 mm and occasionally 10 mm. I would guess yours is most likely 12 mm.

There is not a standardized size of cork for trombone waterkeys. Each brand has its own diameter and height. Even within each brand, there can be difference in cork height depending on how close the saddle is to the waterkey nipple……there can be great variety in that distance. There are even cylindrical versus tapered cork options.

You should take it to a tech and have it custom fitted. I have more than a dozen different waterkey corks in stock for trombones. I also have several neoprene sizes. Even with that many choices, I end up custom cutting corks for about 20% of the trombones that come through.

I got a few little cork stoppers from the hardware store. They're tapered so you just have to cut them to the right height and diameter. I use a blade box cutter. I think they're less than 50 cents each.

Get you some of these. 9.5mm regular will fit just about everything except Yamaha, which takes an 11mm.
