Edwards leadpipe swapping?

Post by NateR »

Hi all,

Just curious if Edwards tenor trombone lead pipes are interchangeable between bore sizes? Specifically will a 547 lead pipe fit in my 525/547 slide? I know they're both threaded, just curious if it's the same. That make sense?

Thanks!

No, leadpipes are (or at least should be) specific to their bore size +/- .001. (E.g. a 509 pipe might fit in a 508 but it'll be super snug because .001 is a really small distance and likewise a 508 might work with a 509 and just fit loosely).

So you might be able to fit a smaller pipe in a larger one but in my experience, these will be a little bit unfocused. You can make alterations to a leadpipe to make them fit if there is enough material on them. E.g. you can buff down a 547 pipe to be a 525 if there is enough material to take away and still have it be a pipe. Likewise, you may flare the bottom of a pipe to fit in a larger bore size with the risk that the pipe will crack if it is too great a distance or the material is too thin. I had a 485 pipe that I expanded to be a .491 pipe but it wouldn't fit in a 485 slide after the alteration.

No, Edwards .547 pipes will not fit in a .525 receiver without significant shortening.

However a .525 will fit in a .547, the threaded collar is the same.

The threads are the same, but in Edwards slides, the .547 large shank receiver interferes with the top tube, i.e. you can't actually screw it down, or fit a large shank mouthpiece in.

I know for a fact the .547 bore leadpipe works in a .562/.578 dual bore slide. However a .562 pipe will not work in a .547 slide for obvious reasons.

A .547 pipe will screw into a bass slide, but it doesn't really fit or seal.

A smaller pipe may fit in a larger bore instrument, but it's not really recommended. You want a good seal and the smallest "step" possible from the end of the pipe to the bore of he instrument. That is not accomplished if you put a .508 pipe in a .525 slide, or anything along those lines.
