You may use any mouthpiece that fits the instrument's receiver.

Try them all – you will probably find that you prefer one over the others. Or none of them may be right for you, and you will then want to enter the mouthpiece merry-go-round! :idk:

Just noticed that you play a Bach 42 (large shank). Valve trombone will probably have a small-shank mouthpiece receiver. If so, none of your large-shank mouthpieces will not fit. The Denis Wick 6BS is small shank, and definitely worth a try. Same for the Bach 6½AL if it is small shank. The 5AL and 5G may be too large for the (typically small-bore) valve trombone.

Wick 5AL is large shank. Do you mean 5BS?

what style are you using it for? if you're playing italian opera stuff, a bach 5-6 general sizing works well for being heard, if you want to play banda stuff, more in the range of a bach 11-12 might be good for the tightness and specific projection of sound.

valve trombones are fun and weird! have fun and don't worry too much!

They are a different beast.
I`ve found that a slightly deeper cup helps round the sound out more. They can get pretty edgy real fast.
Brookmeyer played a fairly big mouthpiece and Rob McConnell played a Conn 3 for most of his career.

People can offer suggestions, but nobody can tell you which mouthpiece is best without hearing you play it on that particular horn. Doug Elliott can do a Skype session with you and help you narrow it down.
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are still missing! :D

The 6.5AL you already have, if it is small shank, will likely be just fine to start. I would recommend beginning with that. As you become more acclimated to the horn, you'll get a much better idea of what you are looking for in a new mouthpiece (i.e. improved flexibility, deeper sound, brighter sound, maybe something in regards to rim comfort, etc.). Right now all people can recommend are dart throws.

Valve Trombones typically take a standard trombone mouthpiece so we're very lucky.
