Doug's system is perfectly designed (i.e., cup/throat/backbore balance) as he play tests it all extensively in order to discovery and tweak the limitations of the cup/shank combo.

Getting hung up on numbers is a good way to end up with a mouthpiece that doesn't work. I also only really use them to compare mouthpieces from the same maker, because the measurements can often vary. There's so much that goes into it.
