Getzen 3047AFR

Post by greenbean »

I picked up a mint-condition Getzen Custom Series 3047AFR yesterday.

HOLY MOLY -- This thing is good! I had no idea. I have only played the Getzen Eterna basses and 351/451 student horns. They have all been very, very good. Well, this horn is no different. Sounds wonderful (even when I play it!), very even sound and response. Does everything just as I would hope it would. It is true that I have only played the horn for 3 hours now, but I probably sound and play better on this horn than any other large-bore I have played.

I am using the #2 leadpipe because it was in the slide and I figure it is a "middle-of-the-road" pipe. And 4-sized mouthpieces. Heaven... :good: ...

Any of you play one of these?...

I mainly play bass, but have been using a 3047AF for about 6 months on occasional tenor gigs with a brass quintet, various church jobs, and a chamber ensemble. Great horn!

I purchased my 3047AFR back in 1995. A bit of history. The horn I have was the fifth one made in the Custom Series. There is a so-called blemish on the bell where they started engraving the "C" and "S" in "Custom Series". Getzen gave me a nice discount as a result. Initially these horns had fixed leadpipes.

24 years later......still love the horn! No issues with the valve and the slide is fantastic. I did rebuild the interior of the case to secure the horn for safer travels. If you have the cash, get the straight neckpipe and give the valve a break once in a while.

I love my 3047AFR. I've tried several Edwards leadpipes over the years and have settled (for now) on a nickel one (no markings but I think it may be a Bach MV copy). Before that I used a sterling T2 for quite a long time. I briefly tried a sterling T1 and an Alessi but they weren't for me.

I use a Bousfield 'S' mouthpiece with it and it's a great combination. I believe it's between a Bach 2 and a Bach 3 for comparison's sake.

I've tried some of the Edwards tuning slide options (yellow dual radius, rose dual radius, rose single radius) but have always come back to the original.

On the rare occasion that I'm faced with a now B-natural on 3rd/bass, I use an Edwards Eb tuning slide on the attachment.

A few things I've been meaning to try but haven't had the opportunity: a yellow bell (Hornguys sells them separately for $795); the lighter axial rotor (my horn came with the solid rotor and I believe the 'newer' ones are manufactured with a healthy chunk removed from the rotor).

Enjoy the horn! :)

Not to derail this whole thing, but i have to say, the 400 series Getzen bells actually are really nice bells! I used one on my personal horn in red brass and i love it!
