Just curious 1950s 88H vs. "Remington Era" 88H

Just curious, what are the playing characteristics, of the 1950s version, vs. 1960s?

I'm guessing, the 1950s, 88h was a custom build. Remington era, things where more standardized.

I was at ESM in 1956 when "Remington" 88H's were ubiquitous and bought my own 88H in 1958. I also presently own a mint 88H dated to 1963. I don't think there is a hair's breadth of difference between the two. Others may disagree.

I have a 59 8h and 68 88h. There's the normal variation between horns, but I wouldn't say there was a difference in general characteristics between 50s and 60s 88s. I think 57 was the first year officially for the 88h model number, but 8h has been around since the early 1900s, and they would put a valve on it as a special order. There was a difference in engraving that happened in about 61. Pre-61 was the half-moon engraving. The basic design stayed the same.

They probably came with a different mouthpiece before Remington, couldn't guess what it was though

There are earlier horns with construction differences. I love the ones with the bow guard on the tuning slide. Or rather, I loved the sound playing next to one of those. Think that was a ‘52 or ‘53 IIRC.

So apparently Emory Remington convinced Conn to change their 88H leadpipe / mouthpiece taper in the mid-1950s.

Were large-shank mouthpiece tapers (sort of) standardized before that?
