Conn Slide help!! Lightweight? yellow brass, Rose Brass. . ???

Hi guys.

I have a few Conn slides including some dual bores.

The standard slides, SL2547 the Silver (SGX) SL4762 and the SL4747 all have nickel Over sleeves at the top of the outer slide. As is the standard I think.

Two of my SL4762 slides don’t have these outer sleeves, which seems to me a little more like the lightweight Bach slides (although brass nickel) and the “standard Edwards slide” which is lighter weight than the “orchestral”. AND, instead of being a rose brass they look yellow. . . . .



Does anyone know if there is a catalogue of options for the Conn SL slides, if they make different metal outers and if my non “sleeved” slides are lightweight?

Typically a handslide without sleeves on the outers is considered lightweight, yes. As far as I know, most 8H/88H style slides come standard with a red/rose brass slide tube and a nickel crook. It's not uncommon for there to be variations in different batches of brass, and variations in lacquer tint can make it difficult to tell as well. The lightweight slide in your photo definitely looks like yellow brass, and the others seem to have more of a golden/reddish hue.


The numbering system denotes bore size (SL4747 is a .547 slide, SL4762 is a dual bore .547/.562 slide, etc.).

That 2547 slide seems to have the tinted lacquer on it. That's why it appears a little more golden than your 4762 slide. Could be yellow brass, could be rose brass. It's hard to tell without stripping the lacquer off it. (You can tell where it's wearing on the lower sleeve.)

Agree that the 4762 is yellow brass, and the standard slide is definitely rose brass (though if it's from Elkhart, according to some, it could actually be bronze).

Yea the 2547 has the tinted lacquer. And the outer sleeves.

The standard slide is defo rose and the 4762 defo yellow. I have another older SL4762 slide which is also light weight but has dark lacquer so not sure of the colour. Best guess is yellow.

Main question was and is,

Are the 4762 slides usually light weight?

It seems so. To add to the confusion, the SL6262 is now described as being the stock modern 62H slide i.e. with NS oversleeves ... but at other times that model number has appeared on a sleeveless/lightweight .562 slide (looking like your SL4762), as supplied with the 110H and 112H.

In my experience the dual bore 4762 don't come standard with oversleeves. When i got my 2547 slide my tech was suprised it had nickel oversleeves. The fact th 4762 slide doesn't have oversleeves is a major turn-off for me.

Conn slides have traditionally had gold brass outer tubes. Laquer tinting obscures it a bit. I remember doing duets with another tech friend and was questioning the material used on my '53 77H slide. He asked for it and took it to his buffer and buffed a spot, brought it back and showed me it was gold brass.

My SL4762 looks like this one.
Strangely enough, it's not engraved "SL4762" anywhere, and has a reinforcement square angled ferrule opposed to the curved one at the base of the hand brace, that the other slides I possess don't have... (SL2525, SL2547, & an Abilene stock slide)

The stock 62H slide does not have interchangeable leadpipes as the SL6262... so not the same beast...
