Olsen Rotor Valve Affect on Open-Side Bach 42B

Post by Arendsdale »

Hi all! I’m really curious about getting an Olsen valve on my closed wrap 42B. I’ve seen lots of posts talking about how much it helps open up the F side of the horn, but does anyone know how it affects the open side of the horn? Thanks a bunch!

I still regret selling my Olsen valve 42. Those valves are absolutely perfect for 42s, in terms of the blow and putting weight in the right place. They're a great middle ground between the awful stock valve and an axial.

sorry to hear, and thanks for the valuable info! Most of the reviews are talking about the F side of the horn, so I was really curious how it affected the open side!

In the other thread https://trombonechat.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=28995 there’s a few mentions about the Bb side of the horn. Compared to my Thayer valve, I found the Olsen to be more stable on the Bb side. It is ever-so-slightly less free or open feeling, but it is much easier to slot notes and project.

I had my 42BO fitted with the Olsen Valve. I Love it !!
It is by far the best Valve I`ve ever played. It`s much more open and yes, it`s much more stable and easy in
the F section. I also put one of the M & K "Ralph Sauer" Braces on the F Attachment slide (it`s the same size
as my Bach 12 hand slide. That added a lot of stability to the F side

That’s awesome! How’s it like on the Bb side compared to the stock rotor?

is there a noticeable reduction in resistance on both sides?

Hmm. I’m thinking I should have my 42bo converted to an Olsen. Can you tell us how much it cost?

Wouldn't this imply straight tenors respond worse?

Sometimes they do.
