Mute rash, King Jiggs

Post by Macbone1 »

I love my King 2BL Jiggs Whigham, like new, but even putting a mute NEAR the bell will leave a mute dent. I use it for big band so of course lots of mutes go in and out. What can l possibly do to preserve the appearance of my bell?.

Have you tried putting a soft tape wind on the end of the mute so you don't hit the bell directly with a metal or hard fiber edge?

The H%B 199 bass cup mute used to have a rubber ring there. You might be able to use a lobster band or the like to put one on a tenor mute.

Perhaps try adjusting your insertion technique. Slide the mute into your bell by first placing one of the corks on the bell, and using the cork to guide the mute into place. I do this to help avoid the dent issue. If one just tries to thrust the mute into the center of the bell, you increase the change of a ding, especially when its a fast mute change.

Good luck. And remember that mute dents can be a sign of a life well-lived.
