2B with finger ring?

I thought I'd worked on every variant of King bone over my 40+ year carreer as a musical instrument repairman. But I've never seen a 2B with a finger ring. Do you think this was factory made or an aftermarket alteration? I couldn't enlarge the pic enough to tell if the ring has a flange (aftermarket) or silversoldered (factory).
Anybody ever see this before on a 2B?

• Since when was a King 2B ever considered an "intermediate" trombone?
• Who would ever play a Schilke 51D (large euphonium mouthpiece) with a King 2B?

Both good questions! I can't tell you how many times a parent would come to me with "grampa's old horn" and want it serviced for their 4th grader to start on. It was usually on old professional level horn. MK VI sax, R13 clariphone, B -Trombones, Bach Stad trumpets!
This one looks like it went through the grade school demolition derby!

It looks to be in pretty good shape though. The bell isn't destroyed, which is usually one of the first things to go. The slide also looks relatively good.

Still no idea why anyone would play a 51D with it, but someone may have said "well if you want a broader sound you need a bigger cup".

Perhaps the trombone was left out in a hailstorm?

Or the bell was used as a target at a BB gun range?

Finger ring is not factory stock on those horns. May have been a custom order with King at the time? Who knows. That said, $1k is a lot for that horn IMHO. Isn't a Schilke 51D about Bach 5G size? I play a Bach 5 on my small bores including my 2B, but I thought I was the only oddball.

Your mouthpiece choice is unusual, but you're not an "oddball" - you should play what works for you.

Yes, the Schilke 51D has a cup about the same diameter (25.55mm) about the same as a Bach 5 (25.50mm) – but the 51D cup is very deep vs the Bach 5 and the throat (7.04mm) is much larger than the Bach 5 (5.85mm). I think this mouthpiece would overpower that little King 2B - quite a mismatch.

Hijacking this further, I switched to the 5 size on recommendation of Doug Elliot and my main mouthpiece for my 2B and 3B is one of his. Works well for me, but probably for very few others. I am an oddball, and proud of it!

I used a large mouthpiece for my 6H for the longest time. I think my Bach 7 is still considered "big" for L.A. considering every one here uses some 11c variant.

The 7C has a rim that is 24.75, ,vs the 24.70 of the 11C. I've been told the real differences between them are elsewhere than just the size. There were some discussions on the old trombone forum. I just picked up a Ferguson 11, which is marketed as the "ultimate 11c", which is 25.00mm, the same rim measurement as a 6 3/4 C.

I think the backbore and cup size are much more important than rim size, which is mainly to fit your face.
