What instrument should I buy?

Post by John »

hello

I am looking for my first trombone with f attachment

and I have a few options for this

I know that in my stable there is a Yamaha ysl640 but it is not mine as such, is of the state, specifically of the symphony in which I play

and these are the options:

- new trombones:

Bach tb502b

Thomann tf525s

- used trombones:

Yamaha YSL356R
(and Standard YSL356)

Conn Director
50H
(sorry, the 88H is no longer an option)

King Cleveland
605F

King 608F

King 4BF

whoever has the most votes I buy it

John

If you're playing in a larger orchestra, I'd say the Conn 88H

Conn 88H.

But it's significantly larger than all the other trombones you mention. You may need to pair it with a SL2525 slide.

I love my 605F but if they lost the 88 is the only thing that makes sense for orchestra.

Are we talking symphony orchestra or symphonic wind orchestra?

88h should work great for both

If the focus is on wind orchestra (particularly 1st chair) from that list I‘d closely look at the 608F and maybe the Yamaha 356.

This might be really obvious but condition is everything, along with how you as an individual get on with each horn. Try as many as you can, if possible in a couple of rehearsals. Buy the one which you enjoy playing the most.

If you're going to play in a small ensemble or wind band I recommend you the King 608F. If it is in a full orchestra the Conn 88H would be the best option.

Conn 88H would be my choice in that list. It's also very versatile, with several different slide bore combinations available.

Against the crowd, I`d go with an Open wrap Bach 42BO

The Trombone Chat conventional wisdom won’t let you down. Of the options listed, it’s the 88h hands down.

I think I should add some of the rationalization behind my suggestion of the 88H:

First, the two new models are definitely a cut below either the Yamaha 640 or the Conn 88H.

Conn 50H and Cleveland 605F are definitely student grade instruments.

King 607F is about the same specs as the Yamaha 640 but not quite as well built.

Yamaha 356 is a cut above the King 607F, but is dual bore

King 4B is a wonderful wind band horn (I used one for a few years) but its sound is a bit bright for full symphony. It's also large bore like the Conn 88H, which is actually larger than the Yamaha 640.

If you really liked the performance of the Yamaha 640 in your orchestra, the 88H is probably the closest match, although it's still a large bore rather than medium bore.

If you really like the 640, there are a bunch of Yamaha horns with similar specs that are just older: 646 or 684. But you didn't say they were available.

If you don't have problems moving to a large bore horn and the King 4B is in better condition than the Conn 88H, go with the 4B. If you really want a Medium Bore, Yamaha 646 or 684. Then the King 607F if those Yamaha models aren't available.
