In this case would you rather have the original 169 bell or the Minick bell that it currently has?

Well, having really enjoyed this new 185 :) I think I'd have the original. But who knows. If it's still around, I'll have to drop by Hornguys and give it a toot.

It's a good playing horn. The bell is a 2 piece bell. I'm glad i got to try it.

I have been looking for a 169 for quite some time now. So this is tempting.

But I'd be clearly more tempted by one in original condition.

I have three 169's - this one at The Horn Guys is more like a 269 - is the Minick two piece gold brass bell soldered or un-soldered? And is the taper like the original 169 which was based on Mr. Kleinhammer's 50B which was either a NY or Mt. Vernon - I've read it was red brass which is rare for a 50 bell.

Looks like the leadpipe has a pull ring - would be interesting to see the Minick leadpipe and how it's labeled.

Having played many Minick bells on various valve sets I'd probably rather have the 169 flare. Minick's bells very generally very heavy. But I'd have to try the instrument to make a decision-it's all about "balance" and how the heavier bell would match up with the slide, etc..

Are you sure? Any Minick-spun bell I’ve ever seen, including the one on my Minick 88h has been a one piece.

Minick’s bells are made of beryllium bronze, I’d describe them as both heavy and and lighter at the same time. The best description I can give from my years of playing my Minick horn is that it’s more “dense” than regular gold brass.

YES! Dense is probably a better description. But for me the ones I played sounded one way and were very hard to color. Combined with a densely built valve section they can play like bricks.
