Not the same phenomenon but timpani should also be placed as far away as possible from bass instruments as their non-harmonic overtones can interfere with the resonance of those bass instruments and cause them to sound softer.

Yeah, and horns resonate the tympani. and the sound of the shoosh in mouth constrictions changes tune, sound quality, and double buzz. It's crazy how little butterfly sounds can multiply huge in unanticipated ways.
