Re: Experience with Paypal buyers protection

One experience: I bought something that didn't arrive through Groupon. After contact with Groupon and no solutions after 6 weeks, I made a claim through paypal. Groupon never responded, and I was given my money back eventually.

Re: Remove laquer on '75 King trombone

Thanks!

The Leather specialities Hand and neck guard set that I ordere arrived as well.
It was quite a challenge to fit it over the grip though... The left-hand piece happens to fit perfectly upside down, covering the whole area until the lock.

Re: Remove laquer on '75 King trombone

I did it with ammonia vapor. Worked within a few hours and looks quite nice. I kept the tuning slide in bright brass, as well as the inside of the bell and the rim of the bell on the other side. I didn't dare doing it with the slide because I'm afraid it'll do something to the inside. I'll just let ...

Bach 42 King 4B Length and diameter of braces and tubing

Strange question I guess, but important! I'd like to buy a 'Leather Specialities' hand and neck guard set for my trombone, but they don't offer it for my model in my country. There are other available, so I'd like to compare the tubing to that of my instrument. So, if anyone could be so kind to meas...

Re: Remove laquer on '75 King trombone

Well, it worked :pant: Took me about about 3 hours of scrubbing with a steel wool sponge and the paint remover I mentioned earlier, but ALL the lacquer is gone now. It didn't damage the horn, and I can honestly not tell a difference in sound either. But now my neck turns green while playing haha. It...

Re: Why No Silver Plate?

You are right about nearly every trombone being lacquered. I feel that in the Netherlands, there are quite a few silver plated ones though. In all bands I play in, at least 1 person has a silver plated trombone. I see quite a few on the Dutch second hand market as well. I'd say that right now about ...

Re: Remove laquer on '75 King trombone

Well, I was going to have it done by a repair shop, but then they told me that the dent that's in there will probably always be visible, and the spots on the slide cannot be repaired easily, while also complaining that the lacquer is tough to remove and because of that they may have to charge extra....

Re: old King trombone series

So many different horns! What's your opinion on these '+' horns? Seems kind of redundant if the 2 3 and 4 are already excellent horns. For now I'll be looking for the Liberty and Concert, if I can find them for an acceptable price I'll try to get silversonic one. Then I can sell the other non-king h...

Re: Notation programs

I use Sibelius, because I know how it works :) I honestly haven't even tried the other ones available. Not for long anyways. The main reason I chose Sibelius was that it had (and still has) the option to easily scan sheet music (or import PDFs) and import that into Sibelius to edit. It's a paid plug...

old King trombone series

I've only been playing for about 1.5 years, and went looking for a larger trombone recently. After some advise from you guys and local trombonists I purchased my first King trombone, a 4b Sonorous. According to most people, this one is 'better' than the currently produced 2104. Is this true for the ...

Re: Remove laquer on '75 King trombone

Hmm, yes, others have mentioned the tough laquer on old Kings. It seems that I have one of those too. As for the Easy-Off: in what way is this caustic harmful for the horn? And which one would you recommend? As for abrasion: I'm not sure i'm comfortable doing that. How would I prevent damaging the b...

Remove laquer on '75 King trombone

I have a King 4B produced between 1975 and 1980, according to the serial number. It's in good shape, but the laquer looks horrible. Completely gone in contact areas, and scratches and spots everywhere. I'd like to get this instrument to the point where it looks good again, and want to do it myself, ...

Re: Mouthpiece suggestions

As mentioned, easiest would be to keep the same rim and different everything else. As for switching between different pieces: that works only if you actually practice on all of them enough. I haven't played bass before, but I play the trumpet and flugelhorn in addition to trombone. Both with a compl...

Re: Olds 25 info?

For those of you that are interested in knowing how this all ended: I bought a trombone today. After having tried several trombones somewhere else (including the 3B and 4B), I took a gamble and picked up a used King 4B Sonorous trombone, no quarter valve, pretty bad lacquer damage, but otherwise in ...

Re: FS: Early 1970's King 3B-F

Let me say this first: your asking price is quite acceptable based on these photos. I'd buy it instantly if I were living in the US. BUT: (I did some reading on importing and stuff) In order to import this instrument to the Netherlands, I'd have to pay 4,1% import duties over the cost of the instrum...

Re: What’s your favorite trombone case?

I haven't tried that many, but I ended up buying the 'Thomann Trekking Case', backpack version. For those unfamilliar with it: Thomann is a large german music store with their own line of pretty much everything. Their cases are generally incredibly cheap yet very durable. I bought one of their trump...

You are correct. I'm Dutch, as my username suggests :) I've returned the trombone. Good to know they still exist and are being sold. I don't know what trombone I'm gonna buy yet because that largely depends on the second-hand stuff placed online. If that is a large shank trombone, I'll look into tha...

Re: Olds 25 info?

OK guys, I returned the olds nr. 25. I still think it played quite well, though the 4B I played just played better. I also noticed that it was an unlaquered copper (I think?) bell, which tarnishes really fast. As in within a week it's black on points where I touched it. That was the final deciding f...

Thanks BGuttman, I was wondering about that!
Still not sure about which model to look for though... 3B, 4B or even 5B.
I liked the 4b sound, but am not sure if I can playing it like that during a whole reheasal. Then the 3B would be more suitable, right?

Ted:
Marktplaats, obviously :)
I check the 'used' section of online retail stores as well sometimes (van der Glas, van Gorp, Adams), but the prices are way higher than on Marktplaats.

Are there any others I should be aware of?

Re: Olds 25 info?

Thanks BGuttman. Removing the 50H and adding the Benge. JohnL: I'm not sure yet if I'm keeping it. Depends on whichever trombone I end up with, how much it costs, and how much I can get for the Courtois. I wouldn't mind keeping it. BUT: I play the trombone currently in 1 band (trumpet in the others)...

Thanks BGuttman, I'll skip the King 607 and 608, as those seem to be student horns (if I'm not mistaken), and the Omega as well. If I'm buying anyway, I'm buying the best i can get for the money. So far on my list to look out for: King 2103 / 3b King 2104 / 4B Sonorous (anyone know the difference be...

Re: Creating an Orchestra Manager / Ideas?

Careful, long post incomming! In the Netherlands, we have a free planning app/website that actually can do quite a lot of what you want. It's called 'datumprikker'. Apparently it also has an english version, but I'm sure there are english programs for this as well. The 'organizer' has/can make a dat...

I saw one adv...

Hello guys, I've played a second hand Courtois 150 (small shank) with a Courtois 12CS mouthpiece as my first real trombone for about one and a half years now. Olds 25 info?

Hello guys, I was wondering if anyone has some info on a trombone I recently bought. I can find virtually nothing about it myself, but have to admit that I am still getting into trombones. I just started little over a year ago :) , but did play the trumpet for about 20 years. So, the question is reg...
