Re: New hand rest/grip

How do you hold the trombone? Do you put your index finger on the mouthpiece or wrap it around the brace? I have pretty small hands and have always had issues with the "standard" grip with the index finger on the mouthpiece/shank/leadpipe area and it gave me a lot of forearm tension regardless of wh...

Re: Rotary Valve Kaiser Baritone

Ok to put it more plainly: the 151 is a great instrument that won’t let you sound like Loren Marsteller on a King. I personally wouldn’t bother with a 56A. Neither of them play or sound like oval Kaiser Baritons, which don’t sound or play like American baritones. If you just want a more vibrant euph...

Re: Rotary Valve Kaiser Baritone

Again, even if they’re both called “baritone” an American baritone and Kaiser Bariton are different instruments, and the 56A/151 sound and feel more like rotary euphoniums than straightened out kaiser baritons. You really need to try them yourself (and get a chance to use them in an ensemble) to fig...

FS: Besson 968 - SOLD

I'm selling my Besson 968 euphonium (lacquer). I bought it new around 2005 and it was my main instrument at the end of high school through my undergrad until I switched to trombone. It's been very well taken care of and the finish is at about 98% with only small spots of fading on the bottom bow. It...

Re: Rotary Valve Kaiser Baritone

I had a chance to play both side by side but it was probably 5 years ago. For me at least, there was no comparison between them: the 151 (at least for me) was a much better instrument. It weights at least a third less than the 56A, had a more vibrant, flexible sound and produced more sound with less...

Re: FS: Assorted Mouthpieces

I still have the 93D but I found a purpose for it so I’m hanging on to it for the time being. But would consider trading for a 95D or comparable contrabass-ish mouthpiece....

Re: Mouthpiece suggestions

FWIW I also play a large bass mouthpiece (Griego Taylor 0, but came from a 93D) and have found that a spectrum of mouthpieces works the best for me when it comes to smaller instruments. When I play large tenor I have an Elliott 106 rim on a Greg Black 5G underpart. The rim is too small for me and so...

Re: Single Bore or Dual Bore?

I switched to a Shires dual bore slide on my Bach 50 and for me and my playing it was a huge improvement. Comparing both with the same leadpipe (Brass Ark seamed copper MV50) it actually slots better with less effort and lets me play with a more even sound across the entire range of the instrument. ...

Re: Valve Trombone Acceptance

I think part of the difference regarding performance of Bruckner is that it’s not that uncommon for the trombonists in German and Austrian orchestras to perform on traditional instruments either from the time period or fairly similarly proportioned, and valve trombones in Germany, Austria, and Bohem...

Re: Screw rim mouthpiece modification

While we're talking about it - Doug, I'm looking at ordering a Greg Black cup/backbore that can accept your rims. I see that Greg can make an underpart that accepts your rim, but would it for some reason be better to get a complete mouthpiece and send it to you to remove the rim and thread? I'm look...
