Re: West Side Story (arr. Jack Mason)

I don't mute the passage, but do broaden and soften my sound or even lean into the stand a bit depending on indoor or outdoor (pops) settings.

Re: Arm soreness while playing

I've had the same issue. Ax handle makes a difference in that it removes tension from your hand .... but the big fix was improving my overall fitness and by extension circulation (aka blood pressure) so the extended contraction of that left bicep is better serviced and cleaned of acid build up. In h...

Re: How to recognize a corporation Bach

I bought my last straight 42 corp for $500 and then dropped another 250 for a trip to The Brasslab - played it for 4 years as my main axe. I've heard the alloy or how they treated the brass changed post corp and that's what makes the difference. I've owned and loved corp and non-corp horns, but that...

Bach/Willson Dependent Bass

Gauging interrest. I have a bass that is collecting dust and will likely regret letting go but ... funds are needed to support other projects. Slide - standard post corporation Bach 50 bass slide that has been to The Slide Dr. and plays very well - no lacquer Valves - dependent open wrap with afterm...

Re: Mouthpiece buzzing

I had followed the herd into the anti-buzz camp a few years ago. Last fall I took a lesson with Steve Norrell, who is a big proponent of buzzing as an integral part of practice. I must say that buzzing the way he advocates has immeasurably helped my accuracy and tone production. It's now a regular p...

Re: 7th Position

I tune a little sharp and then play longer positions for first position tuning flexibility - so 7th is reserved for those cases when it makes sense physically.

Re: Most efficient way of learning a fast passage

I start at the end of the passage with the last few notes and progressively add notes to the passage. I do spend limited time on playing it slowly in context ... careful not to practice in to my memory any mistakes or hitches.

Re: Plz I really need help

All but a few of my horns over the past 30 years have been raw brass. Leave it and let it develop a patina over time. The look of an aged raw horn is uniquely beautiful. The constant buffing and polishing is annoying and takes time you could spend on other things like playing or listening to symphon...

Re: I need help to stop coasting!

My story is quite similar - last fall I finally took the plunge and took a lesson with a guy that punches the clock at Lincoln Center every day. What I took away from that first lesson was remarkable and has kept me hard at work for months with notable and noticeable changes in the quality of my pla...
