Re: Alternative Big Band Setups?

One fairly common setup is the "wide front"; trombones front row stage left, saxes front row stage right, trumpets behind the trombones, and rhythm behind the saxes (drummer as close to dead center as possible). The wide front always seemed to me to actually make it harder to hear the rest of the b...

Re: Is it worth it to refurbish mouthpieces? + How do you buy mouthpieces if you are a school band director?

Yes on Faxx good, solid mouthpieces for $35/40 each. In the late ‘70’s, I took a middle school band director position in an urban area where everybody played a school instrument. None of the brass instruments had a mouthpiece, not one to be seen! My band budget for the year was $25 (not a misprint!)...

I would be happy to have a reliable high F. I can play it, but not as reliably as I would like.
My high F is reliable about 70% of the time.

Re: Lawler trombones

TheSheriff, interesting that you found this thread on the day Roy finished building my new trombone! I received it today. I have not had a chance to play with an ensemble yet but am thoroughly impressed. Beautifully assembled and a big sound. Time has taken a toll on me as I have become an aging, as...

I know Roy is busy (building a horn for me!). Does he do smaller jobs like this?

Re: Etiquette for buying a used horn online

Come to think of it, I have a big band gig next month on 4th part. I used to play lead in that band. I don’t have a horn with an F attachment. If I could borrow one with an F attachment, I will return it after the gig. I promise!

Sounds like that!😎

Re: Yamaha 891z-Lawler - King 3B

I am considering either the 891z or a Lawler setup myself. I have played a 3B SS for nearly 40 years, but am now considering a lighter horn. Nobody has mentioned a Lawler - any particular reason?
