Mouthpiece plating wearing off?

The inside of the cup on my Bach 7C has started to turn a gold color. Is this because of the plating wearing off, or is it just tarnish? What should I do? It's a relatively new mouthpiece, only in use for 3-4 years (but it has seen a lot of use in that time). Here's a Google Drive folder with some p...

XO Tourlite Case

I'll be travelling overseas in the near future. The case I currently use is the Jupiter XO Tourlite case that comes with the XO 1632. Would this case serve me well for airplane travel? It seems like it would fit in the overhead, but if all else fails, would I be safe if I had to check it?

Transport mutes/stands etc.

For a gig, how would you transport a music stand, trombone stand, mutes, and (of course) your instrument? I've recently found a gig where I need all four and have no idea how to efficiently carry it all.

Re: Speak Low Recordings

It's a solo trombone feature (melody plus some bars). Thanks for the input!

Speak Low Recordings

My band is playing Speak Low written by Kurt Weill and arranged by Bob Curnow. Are there any recordings that I should listen to? I've found a great recording of the Stan Kenton band playing it, but was wondering if there are any others that I should use to influence my interpretation. (PS - Curnow's...

Re: Opinions of Jupiter/XO 1632

I play on a 1632RGL-LT. It's the Jiggs Whigham horn perfected, in my opinion. I would compare it to a King 2BL or a Shires Michael Davis model, but with a slightly warmer sound due to the slightly larger bore and rose bell. I use it to play in a small combo/lead in a big band and it works excellentl...

High schooler looking at music schools

As an aspiring high schooler, I plan to audition for music programs next year with the intention of either a trombone performance or jazz studies degree. Because of this, I'm starting to look at schools so that I can potentially have a lesson with college professors and check out campuses. Are there...

Flying with trombone

Of course, it's obviously better to have your trombone with you in the cabin of an airplane, but what if the staff makes you check your instrument? How can you ensure your horn's safe flight? Also, I've heard about putting Styrofoam cones in the bell--would a practice mute serve this same purpose? (...

Re: Recording self on iPhone for auditions, etc.

I've tried that, but all the stands I have access to are flimsy enough that they either won't hold the weight of my phone or vibrate a little when I play. Should I just get a more substantial stand and kill two birds with one stone?

Projecting

I mainly play combo jazz, and the majority of players I listen to are close-to-the-mic improvisers. My sound concept has been along the lines of Watrous, Fedchock, etc. so I haven't spent much time working on the "big, fat, lead sound." I've found myself needing to fill the lead trombone chair in a ...

Recording self on iPhone for auditions, etc.

I will be needing to record (video) audition tapes soon for various things, and all I have is an iPhone and a Zoom iQ7 microphone. How should I go about recording myself? In the past, I've just set the phone on the music stand I'm reading from, but that means that I'm very close to the camera. Would...

Practice mutes

Thoughts on practice mutes? Would you recommend them? If so, which are the best practice mutes for a student's small budget, which are the best if someone has unlimited funds, and why do you think that?

How/when to pick a new mouthpiece

How do you know if you need a new mouthpiece? I've had little experience with different mouthpieces so I have no idea as to if another would work better. If I do try new mouthpieces, what should I look/listen for and how should I go about trying them? I've been playing on a Bach 7c with my .500 jazz...
