Re: Your most mind blowing experience playing trombone

In 1989, Dave Steinmeyer directed the faculty big band during the Frederick County MD Jazz Festival. Another trombonist and I got to trade 4's with Dave on a tune. That was a kick!!!

I use a regular music stand. My iPad doesn't take up much real estate, so it leaves plenty of room for my glasses case, spray bottle, and other small accessories. Plus, I don't have to carry a stand.

Re: Trombone hand grips

I use a Neotech Grip on my 6H. I have osteoarthritis in my hands and wrists, and almost dropped my horn once because of the pain. So it's a great solution for me. It does take a little practice getting your hand out quickly for mute changes. I can see where it could be problematic for double valve b...

Neotech Grip Bushings Free To A Good Home

I just put a Neotech Grip on my 6H. Osteoarthritis in both hands and wrists made it necessary. I only needed the straight bushing, so I have the curved and gusseted ones left over. If you want one or both, PM me your address and I’ll drop it in the mail. Would rather they be used than lounging in “t...

Why Did JJ Switch From King To Yamaha?

Both JJ Johnson and Jimmy Pankow switched from a King horn to the Yamaha 691. Jimmy said in an interview he switched because the Yammy was lighter to play onstage. He still uses his 3B SilverSonic for recording. But why did JJ switch? Weight? Sound? Did he have a falling out with King? I’ve never he...

Early Tempos had the curved brace. I believe they were discontinued for a while, and when they were brought back, they had the straight brace.

I could be wrong, my memory is a bit fuzzy. One of my students in the early 80's had a Tempo with a curved brace. I remember it playing pretty well.

Jimmy Pankow used a 3BSS for years. He now uses a Yamaha. I saw in an interview with Steve Wiest he uses the Yammy for live gigs since it's lighter, but still uses the 3B for recording because of the sound.

I guess if you jump around like he (still!) does, weight could be a factor.

Why drill out and possibly ruin a Bach 11C when you can buy a Rath S11 MN? Or a Denis Wick 12CS? Or even a Schilke 47B? Either, in my view, is a fine replacement for a Bach 11C with a larger throat. :idk: Second the Schilke 47B. Larger throat than a Schilke 47, lets you get more air into the horn. ...
