The list of jazz clubs below is being posted for the benefit of other members who love jazz and travel. It is by no means exhaustive, but a good start. I hope that others will add their favorite clubs to the list so that we all have a reference to consult when we travel.

Selling ale since 1684!

Showing live jazz since 1959!

Right on the south bank of the Thames, this is a lovely old pub with an excellent Thai restaurant attached to the jazz club. Recommended. Image

Is there any jazz club around or in Manchester? Any recommendations to listen or jam?

Here in ABQ,the only club that features jazz on a regular basis is Scalo in Nob Hill, right down the street from UNM. They have jam sessions on Tuesday nights and a trio on Fridays, and other music the rest of the week. They used to have jazz every night, but the economy changed that. The music is in the Il Bar next door.

Several other clubs here have piano trios or soloists about once a week or so,but mostly these days the clubs tend to go for karaoke.

In Australia there really are not many jazz clubs presenting professional bands on a regular basis.

http://www.jazz-clubs-worldwide.com/docs/oz.htm#BRISBANE

Let's face it, there are not that many jazz pros in Oz. But the semi-pro jazz scene is okay, except for the fact that audiences are getting older and older, don't drink when they go out, and have to be home in bed by 9pm. Image

There are a few younger hot musicians in Melbourne trying hard to create a bit of a scene.

Also the Cleveland Bop Shop seems to be an empty site, no events, etc. Is it still in operation??

There are some really good jams in SF at

Grant and Green Bar in North Beach and Amnesia in the Mission.  If you go, bring your horns, I went to Grant and Green last Monday and there were very few trombone players.

Hello, Harry - I found you on this website!  I notice you have the Speakeasy on your list.  It is no longer in business; at least it wasn't when we were there a few months ago.  Jane and I would like to go to all the other places!  When do we start packing?

Hi, Jeff,

Glad to see you here!  I'll have to see how to get The Speakeasy off the list. We can start packing now for trips to the others, but it will take a bunch of weekends to get to all of them....although the trip to Indy to the Jazz Kitchen was great.

Best,

Harry

Last night I went to Jimmy Maks in Portland (Oregon) to hear the remarkable Mel Brown and the B3 organ quintet...anyway, I came for the 8:00 show, but forgot they had bumped the B3 show (a weekly occurence) up to 8:45 or so because they had another act in. The other act was a young woman playing keyboard/guitar and singing, in the vein of what i would call "20-something female emoting expression folk music" - kinda like, I dunno, the "diva" groups of the late 90's. Definitely not what i would call jazz.

Anyway, whatever, but the place was packed - I mean standing room only. Then she ended her set, and the place cleared out, leaving a smattering of folks. I guess my point is that jazz is not as popular as we wish - the "pop" artist drew the large crowd, then the really remarkable local jazz artists groups don't get the draw. One of the groups is a jazz nonet that has been together for 11 years - and the newest member has been with them 8 years - they are tight to say the least - and I've gone to listen where there are only 7 or 8 people in the audience. What a shame...

Sounds like a disappointing experience. I've been to Jimmy Mak's a few times and have never seen anything but great jazz played for a full house. I hear great things about Mel's band but have never checked them out because I usually only get out to see jazz on the weekend.

Anyway, to add to the Portland list, there is a great new club called the Brasserie Montmartre on SW Park. http://www.brasserieportland.com/

And my friends the Bridgetown Saints play at the Blue Monk:
