Quote from: Graham Martin on Nov 17, 2009, 03:32PMI enjoyed that Wes. Maybe some of the doodling starting ten bars in was a bit over the top but when you get a chance to show off, why not?

Wolpe arrangements? I'll leave that for another day. Image

Thanks, Graham.

Show off?  Nope. Not me. Wrong guy. This was a memorial concert for a fellow trombone player and good friend who passed away the day after our last gig..two weeks previous. Just thinking of him. Just playin' the way I hear it.

Over the top? Who says?

The arrangement? It works. Functional.

No doodle tonguing 'til the first beat and 1/2 of the 10th bar...it can be done.

the first two links are to video of a recent gig.  both are recent arrangements for george gee's band.  the first is a cannonball tune called "wabash".  the second link is "you say you care" featuring our female vocalist, hilary gardner.  rough performance...but that was a first reading for most of the band.

the last link is my fb fan page, just in case you can't access the first two links.

At the risk of being accused of self-promotion...an activity in which I probably should have indulged more during my career, not less...I offer these trombone moments from one of the great short-lived bands, a Mingus group led by Jim Knepper. The Mingus Superband. Live in Perugia, 1989. What a tour!!! Billy Hart. Jimmy Knepper. Lou Soloff. George Adams. Craig Handy. Reggie Johnson. Jack Walrath. The incomparable John Hicks. Shipping a tuba and a trombone on planes. Mingus's stuff done right. Free but simultaneously rigorous. Rare.

Jimmy first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrr01m9LbGw

Then his acolyte: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhkDnjVnEck

Good times.

I never got that. just spread music...

beautiful clips. I love the emotion, daring and warmth in your playing.
the video mixes never convey what's really happening dynamically, that's an entirely different layer also.

Thank you, Josh.

When you have people like Billy Hart, Reggie Johnson, George Adams, Nick Brignola, John Hicks and Jim Knepper sharing on the same stage with you, you are surrounded by "emotion, daring and warmth". It's hard not to be infected by it.

No, I take that back. It's impossible.

Like I said...good times.

The best of times.

Yeah! My kind of swing. And what a great audience of dancers. Unfortunately you rarely find anything like that kind of enthusiasm anywhere in Australia these days, except maybe at the jazz festivals. And when you do, they have to be back home in bed at the old folds home before 9pm. That obvious dance floor enthusiasm from a not-so-old audience reminds me very much of how it was in the UK in the fifties and sixties. Please take me back! Or maybe I should visit your neck of the woods, Dave?

I like Ed Pezant. Particularly the melody referenced parts of his solo. That is the kind of solo a non musician audience understands. It is no good playing solos that only musicians appreciate.

Dave, Just out of interest, are you selling your arrangements?

i'd feel a little conflicted selling these charts, since i wrote them specifically for the band.  not sure i'm ready to go that direction.

and...the scene is alive around here.  that party was the night before new year's eve.  we played a dance a couple of weeks ago in Washington DC and there were more than 800 folks dancing.  it's amazing to see and feel the band actually engaged in conversation with the dancers.  some of the very sophisticated dancers actually dance the arrangments or interpret a soloists improvisations through their movements.  it gives one a visual perspective of music...inspiring at times.

No, not even close - it's his Bach 36 New York. He had two of them. Lost one in 1971 to British Airways. Found the love of his life, a gold plated Bach 36 Mt Vernon with oversized (8,5") bell. Jim always played Bach 36. A rarity in his day.

I've taken a lot of criticism regarding my 1001 High F's videos so I've decided to create another in the series to clear up a few issues. The issue I address in this episode is the re-articulation of the High F.

This one is in two parts because YouTube will not allow videos over 10 minutes in length.
