You might try borrowing an ErgoBone for a bit until your hand heals, and even afterwards while you’re doing physical therapy.

I sliced open the palm of my left hand many years ago; I went with a valve 'bone, but a euph would have been better.

my son had tryouts for HS bands 2 weeks after having shoulder surgery (left shoulder).  He wasn't allowed to lift his trombone with his left had but he was able to hold it after I rigged up a support (sculpted foam on top of a monopod) for him.  Worked well for the month he needed to use it.

I too would recommend an Ergobone,  but the cast may be too cumbersome.

sorry folks.
Just went and played an hour with the cast...
not optimal, but at 66 I can't skip 3 to 4 weeks.
At my age it would be like 3 to 4 months,

True, but at 66, will it be more detrimental to not play or to prolong your arm’s recovery by placing unnecessary strain on it?  As we age our healing ability slows.  Putting that kind of stress on the arm, and on the rest of you as you compensate for the lack of mobility in the casted arm, may do more long-term harm than skipping 3 or 4 weeks. 

Buzzing and breathing exercises may be the least harmful option.  And, remember that when you get your cast off you’ll need to rebuilt strength.  I broke my left wrist in college and ended up with a Greenhoe rest bar to help compensate the weight while I rebuilt the muscles.
