Gunhild Carling is playing at Blues Alley tonight (Monday November 20).  I'll be there - anybody else going?

She's also going to be in NY on Wednesday night at 54 Below.

Gunhild put on an incredibly entertaining show tonight.  She's the real deal - good jazz player, pretty much trad style, gets around on trumpet, trombone, recorder, harmonica, bagpipes, and she tap dances too.  She's got some serious chops - she used range up to high F on trumpet, and C or D above double high Bb on trombone.  A lot about her playing style reminds me of Wycliffe.  She actually has amazing facility and nice jazz style on all those instruments.

Tuesday night she's in Philadelphia at the World Cafe Live upstairs, then Wednesday in New York at 54 Below.

I highly recommend going if you can.  Blues Alley was almost full for both shows on a Monday night, which is very unusual.

I youtubed her.

Wow.

Such stage presence and enthusiasm.

Don't tell Geezer, he'll have to start working on IGSOY an octave up.

She does a live show every Sunday evening (on the Internet) (Sweden time - 8PM) which is 1 O'clock Houston time. Great entertainment every weekend.

She was in Austin a few months back and I missed her. I should have done a better job of paying attention to her schedule.

Aw!! Wish I'd checked the forum this morning!!! Image

I originally discovered her through her TED talk and something she did with Postmodern Jukebox. She must be an absolute BLAST to see live.

I spent the evening on youtube.

The laundry isn't folded yet and I have to be up at 0530.

Still, time well spent.

What's her main instrument? I thought that it was the trombone.

I think she plays recorder like it's her main instrument - at least in the key of C.  The tunes she played on recorder and bagpipes were both in C.

But actually she plays nearly everything as if it's her main instrument.

I've seen her play classical harp, but I've also seen videos when she was very very young playing trombone. She couldn't have been over 12 years or so.
