Just got sent an email with this link and note, and thought I'd share it.
Enjoy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5cJh7kE118

On April 2 3, 2006, Glenn Dodson led Posaune Découple, an ensemble of ten trombonists from various regions, in concert at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, PA. Beyond the unique program format and extremely articulate (often comedic) narration by Dodson, the audience in attendance was reminded of the importance of music education and the trombone's rightful place in the chamber forum. Decouple's event profoundly demonstrated the successful passing of the trombone discipline through multiple generations and revealed (yet again) a special brotherhood within the trombone community itself. Members of Posaune Decouple 2006 include Joseph Alessi (principal of New York Philharmonic), Mark Lawrence (principal of San Francisco Symphony), Glenn Dodson (former principal of The Philadelphia Orchestra), Carl Lenthe (former principal of Bamberg Symphony in Germany), M. Dee Stewart (former assistant principal of Philadelphia Orchestra), Nitzan Haroz (principal of Philadelphia Orchestra), Matthew Vaughn (assistant principal of Philadelphia Orchestra), Eric Carlson (second trombone of Philadelphia Orchestra), Blair Bollinger (bass trombonist of Philadelphia Orchestra) and Darrin C. Milling (bass trombone principal of São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra in Brazil).

Bach is for all instruments. When listening it the time is standing still and could be forever. They seem to enjoy playing it and we enjoy  listen it.  Nice.  Mahler is always........ mmmmm. Is it so that Bernstein never did use the same tempo twice?

When Bach is being played, I've always had the perception of time not moving, and it seeming to go on forever.

I have a bad habit of recording videos of gigs from my lap or the music stand...  There's a reason for this. I get to witness some unbelievable moments and I'm sure glad I had my camera last night. Yeah, there's some of me in this one but check out the trumpet player (Joe Gransden) and the tenor player (Bryan Lopes).  These are a couple of the heavyweights here in Atlanta and I'm honored to play with them.

The gig: Tempest Little Big Band (nonet) at Twain's Billiards and Brewery, Decatur, Ga - 3/09/09

I'm not sure who this is - It's a rendition of bolero with a bunch of looping and electronic stuff.

Also, it looks like his horn has two bells?!  Anyone familiar with this?

For a great straight-ahead album, check out JJ and Al Grey on the CD called "Things Are Getting Better All the Time."  Two bones and rhythm. They trade some amazing mute playing and deliver the goods over the whole recording.

All-time personal favorite YouTube video: Willie Colon with Hector Lavoe. "Todo tiene su final"

This was the first exposure I had to really great salsa. I joined a local band that had gone through at least six or seven trombone players before me.  I knew less than nothing about the music--I was basically relearning small tenor to get more work than I could find as a classical bass trombonist. A guy in the band said "check out this video."  I watched the first couple of seconds of blurry footage and thought "what is this junk?!" The camera cut to a shot of Willie Colon and Eric Matos doing their thing. Then the brilliant Hector Lavoe cut through with his pure voice, and my life was over.  End of story.  Salsa is now my religion.

Willie Colon and Eric Matos absolutely lay it down in this clip. To me, the groove is as hardcore as anything Coltrane conjured with Elvin and McCoy. The band burns with a life-or-death passion. When the bongo-bell pattern comes in, it is like turning things up to eleven.

If anybody could sum up the reason music exists, it is written all over the face of the kid dancing while his mom looks on with a big smile. (Around 4:47)  Eric takes a sweet solo around 4:50.

Time for some real 'hot' jazz trombone. I couple of clips of George Masso that I don't think I have put up previously.

With Lino Patruno from 1980 in Milan, Italy playing ‘Pennies From Heaven’:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGhoGQqFE-M

Here with Peanuts Hucko in a Condon memorial performance in 1985 playing ‘Fidgety Feet’. An All Star group - Yank Lawson on trumpet, Danny Moss on tenor sax, Ralph Sutton on piano, Jack Lesberg on bass and Gus Johnson on drums. Gees, not very many of those great swinging musicians are around today. Members who engaged in the topic about tailgate trombone playing should listen well to George on this one. Perfect!

Second in my series of 'hot' trombone players who are my personal favourites! This post features Dan Barrett, here with Chris Hopkins (p), Henning Gailing (b), Oliver Mewes (dm) and Andrej Machnev (ts) playing "Take The 'A' Train. Filmed in 2004 at Storckshof Dortmund, Germany.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJtID4bv0AA

Here is Dan playing in a three-trombone frontline with his best mate Tom Baker (sadly, no longer with us) and Michael Supnick at the Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland). Other musicians are Rossano Sportiello (piano), Lino Patruno (guitar), Guido Giacomini (bass) and Giampalo Biagi (drums). The tune is 'Linger Awhile'. Those frontline guys also play cornet and I previously posted another clip from this festival where they do this. Tom Baker was also a very impressive reeds player and is really missed here in Australia, which used to be his home base.

horn section: Brandon Lee-trumpet, Chad Eby-alto/tenor sax, Branford Marsalis-tenor/soprano sax, DG-bone

the clips are from a larger suite of music doug wrote which was inspired by william faulkner and performed at joe's pub, nyc in december 2008.

Oh Yes!!!!!! My very favourite jazz trombone player of all times!

I did post that one before but it was a long time back. True trombone royalty and lives in the same city as Christine. The trombone King and Queen of Luton. Image

I would have got around to posting some of Roy myself. Such as this one, which I have also posted previously, of Roy playing "It Don't Mean A Thing" with The Alex Welsh Band - without a doubt my favourite British band of all time. As far as I know this is the only YouTube of them when Roy Williams was in the band available on the internet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2zBeM5T1wM

And here in his more familiar role these days of visiting royalty with the Harlem Ramblers on "Poor Butterfly":

Hot! Hot! Hot! The ultimate goal for my trombone playing and has been for 40 years, is to sound a bit like Roy.

Roy Williams seems able, seamlessly, to combine "high and fiddly" with use of the entire range of the instrument, whilst also, in his solos, playing a recognisable "tune" with a wonderfully sweet and smooth tone. And he's a very nice, modest man. True trombone royalty as you said, Grah. I'm not so sure about the "Queen" part though. I played "Don't mean a thing" last Saturday and it didn't sound much like that.... Image

Even getting remotely close to Roy's level of playing would mean a major step onwards and upwards for any of us less royal trombonists. Roy is amazingly trombonistical and musical.
