More Sam Burtis with Buddy Rich in 1967.  Sam's clip is around the 4:30 mark.  Looks like Buddy's set is attacking him towards the end of the solo...

Buudy's set was almost always attacking the soloists. That was his thing. This time it was just physicalized a little. Playing a solo at tempo with him was like trying to sit down to a good meal in a confined room full of starving, crazed ferrets. Every time you tried go take a breath, he'd "fill", and out the window would fly any space or grace. The only reason he didn't do it on that Norwegian Wood thing posted earlier here was that his hot licks didn't work in three-based meters so he whad to...reluctantly...revert to making music.

He could make music .

He just didn't.

Too bad.

He coulda been a contendah.

Instead he became the punchline to a bunch of nasty jokes.

What a waste of talent!!!

that's some really nice playing Sam....glad it was captured somewhere for folks to see. That was always the knock on Buddy's band though, wasn't it? Alot of really nice playing going on, comped by thundersticks. JATP meets DCI

Urbie circa 1976 at Lake Buena Vista Country Club Lounge

Thanks a bunch for posting that one - it really brings back the memories! I graduated from high school in '76, from a town in Florida about an hours' drive from Disney, and I may well have been in the audience! Me & a couple of buddies from the trombone section made the drive to Orlando, heard Urbie & had our minds suitably blown, shook his hand & mumbled "You're really great" or something to that effect. Playing piano was quite possibly Bubba Kolb, who worked the bass trombone chair in the Magic Kingdom bands during the day & fronted the trio at the lounge at night, although I'm not sure what year he started.

As a footnote, the Village Lounge was that now-extinct beast, a club where you could go & hear the greatest jazzers in the world for no cover, no minimum, for a while, until the Disney management came to their senses. I ended up working for Disney, driving monorails, but I still got to listen to some great musicians who were working in the park.

That's Dennis Wilson - great plunger player who now teaches at U of Michigan, among other things.  Very nice guy, too.

One very cool thing he was part of planning was a battle of the bands at an IAJE in NYC a few years back in which the Basie band was next to Faddis' band (ex-Carnegie) on stage, dueling to the big band death.  If memory serves, Steve Turre and Dennis had a moment of plunger dueling.

Thanks for the link - great modern Basie stuff.

Speaking of the Basie band, there was a video of April in Paris up a while back. I think it was Basie's birthday, and it was the closing tune. The saxes lay so far back in the soli that they end up a couple measures behind... but it's disappeared. Anyone know of this recording or video?

Fred absolutely funks it up. This is what inspired me to start doing funk.

I have had the Joe Pass and J.J. Johnson "We'll Be Together Again" CD playing in the car for the last week and a thought started to gel about maybe getting together with a guitar-playing friend of mine, to form a duo. A guitar seems like the only viable member of a duo, which includes a trombone, to give the correct balance of melody and rhythm - other than using a (or some) pre-recorded rhythm section. Then I found this video, and I am even more convinced:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvQEhJb60g0

I had been thinking of giving "Bling! Bones!" (3 Trombones & rhythm section) another airing at the National Jazz Covention in Melbourne at Christmas time, so my guitar playing mate will be there. It seems like a great opportunity to launch the new duo. Image

BTW, what do you think of Shawn and the Wolf on the "Just The Way You Are" video clip?

Here are some more jazz trombone/guitar duos of varying approach and quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FMpawTxf6o

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmPRziqo2_k

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh6YQqXfxHM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWpBUSnxKiw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5lJsuc1AXw   Shheeeesh! Image Image Image

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nTHxLnnp2g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR--gk1gtMU   A couple for the ladies here. I'm not sure about the vocals. Or the dress. But the audience seem to like the performance.

I think I'm on to something here with this duo idea. I suppose it could get a bit 'samey', so one would have to mix up the mutes, tempos, types of rhythm etc. And if the worst comes to the worst, there is always that dress! Image

Or this one:

What a joy to hear that old style of swing from a big band. Who takes the first trombone solo? I have read posts by Joel Helleny on the trombone forums, mainly Sam's I think, and I did not realise he was such a 'hot' player. Five stars for that one in my book!

Yeah. Joel is a cross-idiomatic master. His stuff seems to work anywhere. I haven't seen him around NYC in ages though. I don't know where he is.

Some convincing funk here from Gov't Mule and featuring the Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns. The tune is Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8G4q52EsCc

The trombone player, whose name I do not know, moves very well and solos last. In fact the whole thing is moving along! Image

Here is some more of that trombone action. This time just from the Dirty Dozen on the tune "Ain't Nothin' But A Party":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXDzhPM8nJk

It ain't very sophisticated, but IT IS FUNKY!!!!!

Here is one of my favorite dixieland groups that have a lot of music posted on their youtube site. Slidin' Selena is their trombonist and does a great job!

Bert, the leader, plays the bass saxophone, and from what I understand the cost of a bass saxophone, this is an expensive bass line, but hey, he does a great job!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtm3i5XixV8

PS - This is old fashion trad jazz, so beware!
