Video Test thread (please participate)

Post by Neo Bri »

So this is a test thread. I'd like to have a nice long thread full of videos (embedded) that we can use to see how performance is. Let's try to crash the site, or your computers/devices, or both.

Here's one:

This one doesn't show up as embedded for me (Safari on Mac). I see just a link.

Yes, I'm working on it. I just added a youtube button but I don't think it's correct yet.

Is there a way to force the link to open in a new tab or window?

Yeah. My YouTube button isn't working. I'll remove that until I can fix it.

As for the new tab thing, we might be able to change that in the forum software. Also, you might be able to change it in your browser settings. Finally, you can also ctrl-click or right click to do so.

New tab is also middle click but you have to have a mouse for that which I suspect a lot of users don't have now. Let me check.

Trying again. Linking from Google Drive.

Seems to work. It's an old (2008) cell phone vid.

That's Winnifred in the crate and Sadie on the outside. In order to avoid conflicts, we usually feed one of our dogs in a crate. Several times we had left the kitchen while the dogs ate their dinner and returned to find the crate open, even though we were sure it was latched when we left. It took us a while to catch on to what was happening.

Sadie was not taught this behavior; we think it developed because the crate latch originally had a soft plastic cover on the metal handle. Somehow, in the process of chewing on the handle, she figured out how to open it.

I think the media tag only works for youtube at this point. I tried to post a vid from my site and it show up as a link rather than embedding.

The list of media that should work is here:
 • Facebook
 • Google Drive
 • Google +
 • Google Sheets
 • Instagram
 • Imgur
 • Instagram
 • Archive.org
 • Pinterest
 • Reddit
 • Soundcloud
 • SlideShare
 • Scribd
 • Spotify
 • SoundCloud
 • Twitter
 • YouTube
Unfortunately, the add-on does not provide capability to embed posts from personal websites.

I've added Vimeo to the list; I originally excluded it as I had never heard of it. There are some sites included with the addon by default that are notorious for pirated content and that sort of thing so I tried to eliminate those and lumped Vimeo into it.

Its possible that the Vimeo media will embed now that I've enabled it but we might have to make another post.

It looks like you linked to a website, not the video itself. If you click the share button inside the video, there is a "Link" text area you can copy and past. Insert that into media tags and you'll be able to embed it here:

Vimeo's one of those things that you use without realizing it. Kind like yimg.com.

Hopefully more useful than that as I have all yimg content blocked with NoScript

This is a video test thread, but I have to say thanks for posting Trombone Shorty as the opener. A rare talent at such a young age and he's continued and developed that talent to make a great career for himself. It's very clear the respect and admiration the other band members have for him, not least as he simply wouldn't be there among them without that respect.

When I try using the Media button to embed a Youtube link, the forum gives me this error code (without the spaces around 'media' :

'You cannot use certain BBCodes: [ media ].'

Can you post a link to what you are trying to embed as well as the exact syntax? You can put it in a code block to avoid escaping:

Code: Select all

Note that the original plugin that was included in the original, original version of this software is no longer supported, so we don't have access to things like the thread that spawned this, which was actual "youtube" blocks, etc. Additionally, there are a number of sites that are also no longer supported but the primary ones that have public embedding are.

Well for instance just trying to quote your last post gets me the message. Actually even writing

[ media ]

without both added spaces gets me the error message as well, even without a link and without the closing button.

Found it; it's a little tedious to fix but I'll try to finish this AM.

EDIT: JK, it was actually really easy so it should work now. Let me know if you still have issues.
