I was just being argumentative. Honestly I don't think it is him, but I can certainly respect your opinion. If it's not it would be fun to know who it is!

Here's a couple more I just uploaded:

1) ...an edited behind-the-scenes look at a recording session for Cee Lo (of Gnarls Barkley fame and producer, singer, rapper) with Will Scruggs on saxophones and Ken Watters (Harry's ultra-talented brother) on trumpet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLpglwGvekA

2) ...some footage of a brief solo with the Auburn Knights Orchestra located in Auburn, Alabama... Fast? Yes. Too many notes? Probably.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm4wZW6JJhM

Enjoy...or don't.

I searched the forum for the URL to this one and didn't find it, so have mercy if this turns out to be a repost.

Nils and a divinely beautiful Viktoria Tolstoy.

quote from one of the comments: "This video is such a validating moment for us trombone players. A trombone player is front-lining with a good looking/talented singer while the saxaphone and trumpet players are obscured in the background... ... it doesn't happen often but it's nice to see the bone up front!!"

I believe our ever-eloquent DJ Kennedy once said "too many noodles ruin the soup." That would apply here, if those notes were noodles. But that stuff was straight-up beef.

Great ensemble playing.  The chart was a little overwritten (in my opinion....but that's certainly not to say I could ever do better in my life) Just a whole lot to take in, a little abrasive to the ears after a while. Steve has some great things happening there!

Here's a live version from NYC's Birdland.  I'm glad I saved the studio version to compare.  Pretty damn impressive ensemble playing, and steroid chops all around, with great solo, lead, and section bone playing.

From the University of North Texas, here are "The Maniacal 4", winners of the ITF 2009 Quartet Competition. This was the required piece--Simon Wills' thorny and tempestuous "Sonata for Four Trombones".

I am looking forward to following the on-going growth of each of these fine players, both collectively AND individually!!!

Enjoy!!

...a brief, yet loud solo of mine on the Perry Mason Theme Song as performed by Kingsized (www.Kingsized.biz) at the Candler Park Festival, Atlanta, GA.

The YouTube description says it already but I'll say it again.. The house speakers were crazy loud, hence the not-so-great sound quality AND my wife recorded it all while keeping up with our hyper-dancing three year-old so the video is a little shaky at times..

The Count Basie Band:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr-W8iYNuNI&feature=related

Posted here because I'll be damned if that's not Fred Wesley on second bone...

There's no date specified for this performance but it looks like it could be from the era that Fred was with the band. Looks like a black-lacquer 3B and he holds the slide like Fred too.

You get the first glimpse at 0:14...

You are correct, I think. Fred Wesley did play in Count Basie's band, replacing Al Grey. Fred talked about his time in the Basie band in his autobiography.

A very nice solo from Dave Panichi (returned Aussie!) playing with the James Morrison band, who provides a bit of their past history playing trombone as kids. The vocalist is Deni Hines who has released a recording with James, which includes 'God Bless The Child', the tune being played here. A nicely saved ending by James after Deni goofs the ending, but I don't think the audience would have noticed a thing if she had not said anything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLXVf-Xfdv4

Deni is normally associated with pop music and is the daughter of a superstar in Australia, Marcia Hines. I have to say that Deni's vibrato worries me slightly.

Gees, I hope Dave Panichi is home to stay! It seems like it because it has been a few years now and he is involved with teaching. Maybe he'll wear the beard for us one day. Image

Here is another grab of him playing Rainy Day with the James Morrison Big Band. It looks like it was shot by one ot the members of the band from within the band.

I was surfing around the internet over the weekend and came across this transcription of Andy Martin's solo on the tune 'Emily' as played with Carl Saunders' BeBop Big Band.

http://www.jazzprofessional.com/cd_reviews/emily-bassclef.pdf

Now, I play this tune myself but I play it in the original jazz waltz form, and so I wondered what it would be like in 4/4, and did some more searching around. I came up with a video of Andy playing the tune, but not from the session of the transcription. It was the MJO from 2008 in Colorado. But it's a nice solo and the band sounds proficient and okay also, allowing for the PA hum and recording circumstances:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66iDqJsFAlo

Most of you will know that I am not very keen on trombone solos that are mainly high note doodling without much melodic content. Andy's lines are certainly modern and do go quite high but they make a lot more sense to me than some. They do say that the average jazz fan prefers a certain amount of predictability in a solo. Well, I'm pretty average, don't cha know. Image

So, my wife videotaped me playing the Dave Wolpe arrangement of Misty last night with Joe Gransden and Jazz Orchestra Atlanta. We have a steady big band gig on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at Cafe 290 in Atlanta, Ga. If you're gonna be in town on one of those nights please come on in!

It's very cool to say the words "steady big band gig" these days.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

I enjoyed that Wes. Maybe some of the doodling starting ten bars in was a bit over the top but when you get a chance to show off, why not?

Wolpe arrangements? I'll leave that for another day. Image
